US-Cert has confirmed that the Adobe Acrobat Reader AND Acrobat (both for all versions prior to 8.1.2) both contain exploitable code that is being exploited (per the SANS Internet Storm Center).
Adobe has confirmed that the worst exploitable error(s) would allow a remote attacker to run remote code on your machine-- read this as meaning potentially take over your machine. The vector for this exploiting would be a specially crafted .pdf file loaded into Acrobat or Acrobat Reader prior to version 8.1.2. Since Adobe Acrobat Reader is intended to run automatically when a browser is presented with one, the loading of .pdf files is automatic.
