General computer problems (No hurry)

My friend worked at a pawn shop for a while, and recovered a laptop which someone had bought and returned to them because of some problems (Battery wouldnt hold a charge, CD tray broken...) But they returned it with a bunch of "Extras" too. Now, I have run Avast! (Found some with this), but Spybot, and Adaware will not install/run currently. It seems the previous owners tried to clean up the computer before taking it back to the pawn shop and may have deleted something which they shouldnt have which is contributing to the way the computer is running. I am hoping that you fine people can help tell me if there is anything in the HJT log that shows something which shouldnt be there. Thanks in advance!

Hello Dark_Master,

I am a new helper here, so although the title doesn't show yet I will be providing assistance for requests. No infection showing here, but as this is only XP SP1, and has that very old and very vulnerable Sun Java version installed, if it spent any time on line so far it had a good chance of being infected. Without SP2 and it's must have security patches and updates this system will always get infected - has this person tried updating it yet?

Post back on that, and also Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your protective software queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here. Here are guidelines for using Silent Runners if needed.
