Getting the pop up in the system tray saying "System Alert: Malware Threats" and I also see we now have a "Security Toolbar 7.1" as part of IE.

Hello RyderOCZ,

Infection is showing here. A few days have passed since this log was posted, so let's get a fresh view and work from there. Run and post back a new HijackThis log.


Also Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply (usually at C:\rapport.txt).

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually the C drive), and launch from there.

NOTE: Please do not run any other options from SmitfraudFix until we discuss the results.

Hi Thomas,

I am out of the country right now and do not have access to his PC. I did run smitfraud and found 2-3 infected files. I was able to clean those files, etc and the system seems to be just fine or so I am told.

When I return home, I will post a new log to make sure things are clean, but that will be 3 weeks from now, so best to just close this thread as resolved and I will create a new one if necessary at that time.

Looks like some one has done some repairs there since the earlier log posted, and no infection is showing there now. Since I wouldn't know what changes were made or scans run, are there any issues on the system at this time?

Aha....he is getting sneaky on me while I am out of town.

He has been good up until today, he opened an attachment, then there were problems. He has several popups happen, but he did say he ran Spybot and it cleaned 4 items, so it is possible he found the answers to get things cleaned while I was gone. He can be resourceful when he wants to.

Prefer to stay clear of rights. Lefts too for that matter.

That doesn't give me a sense of confidence then, as far as this system truly being cleaned up. Better to do an additional scan than assume.


Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Making sure dss.exe is directly on your desktop, go to Start - Run, and copy/paste the following (then press OK):

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

When the DSS Configuration display opens click the "Check All" button. Next, Under Main Log, uncheck the following:

System Restore
Temp Cleanup
Process Modules

Then under Options, place a check next to the following:

Backup Registry Hives

Don't make any other changes at this time. Then click the "Scan!" button to start the scan.

Once the scan has completed a textbox will appear - copy/paste those contents back here (main.txt). Also a second text file, extra.txt, will show as minimized in your Task Bar. Maximize/Open this, and copy/paste those contents back here along with the main.txt please. (The logs can also be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder)
