Hi,

I got some kind of virus or something today, AVG isn't getting rid of it and my scans with AdAware don't seem to be getting rid of it either. It changed my desktop background to teal with a "Warning: Spyware threat has been detected on your PC" and a link there.

I keep getting warning messages on my taskbar from something that's claiming to be windows security center, but the wording and such in the messages makes me very suspicious.

Also get popups to antispyware stuff on my browser.

Welcome to Icrontic Ernie,

That batco item is malware - part of a Rabio search hijacking adware install. But a bit more also showing here, so let's start repairs.


Open HijackThis, and choose None of the above, just start the program. Click Config – Misc Tools – Open process manager. From the list, click each of the following if it is present, and Kill Process. Close HijackThis.

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop.

Then disable your net access, and click the downloaded file to run the repair.

When starting ComboFix will cause your computer's internal speakers to produce two beeps, and during the start process display two warnings. These are intended to discourage people who are not getting help in the forum from just experimenting with tools they do not understand. Just to inform you so you will understand that the procedures are expected, and okay.

ComboFix will also change the drive autoplay settings there as it's own added security measure. When we have completed all repairs here we will return the default Windows settings.


A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop, however given the infection there ComboFix will likely cause a reboot in order to complete it's repairs.

(ComboFix will also disable any screensaver settings made, so know that at some point when we complete repairs you will need to reset your screensaver)

Re-enable net access, and post back the C:\ComboFix.txt log as well as a new HijackThis log please.

You will need to start your own request thread, and then someone can come along and assist you. Be very sure not to apply anything you see in the steps here without first having someone review the setup on your system, as one person's repairs could be another person's system damage. Just follow the steps here and create a HijackThis log to post in your thread for review.

Ernie, still awaiting on your results so we can move forward with repairs here.

thought i had it cleaned up.. but it came back. it stayed away for a day or so, but than managed to redownload itself. symantech real-time detects it, and quarantines it, but i am curious how it continues to redownload itself.

i don't see anything suspicious in hijack this anymore.. superantispyware doesn't detect anything either. browsers security settings are all really high.
