Problem with RAM

PC PitStop says:
Description Results
RAM installed 1280 MB
Windows RAM 632 MB
Total RAM slots 4
Available RAM slots 2
Max RAM module size 256 MB
Memory Type 1024+256+0+0: DIMM,Unknown,;T16
Speed Rating 2518 MB/s (102% of 57 similar)

The pc system says 1280MB too

The problem is there is only two slots for RAM not 4
and there's a stick of 512MB and a stick of 128MB
and that don't add up 1280MB
So can anyone tell me what's up?

If you go into your bios does it report the ram size and if not there it should show up as part of the post screen somewhere, that will be your RAM size.

If you go into dos and do a mem command what's it reporting?

    655360 total conventional memory
    655360 bytes available to MS-DOS
    634048 largest executable program size

1048576 bytes total contiguous extended memory
0 bytes available contiguous extended memory
    941056 bytes available XMS memory
MS-DOS resident in High Memory Area

at boot up memory testing 647168 OK + 8192k shared memory
Which looks like I think it should so why is it saying 1280 MB?

Ok so you do physically only have 640mb of ram.

If it's reporting double that I'm guessing there is some ram doubling software installed on that machine that is faking things.

Run CPU-Z on your system and it should give you a read on what size sticks of ram are installed in the individual slots on your board.

EDIT: Like the pic I've just attached.

    No software like that

So I don't know why it's system info and PC PitStop are
    reading what they're reading.
So what you think something else is wrong somewhere?

Sounds to me like that PC Pitstop program is having bad problems reading that old mobo and it's components. I personally don't have any experience with that program either. But with it giving results like that, I don't think I've missed anything either. What is that system, old Athlon or P3 system?

Athlon, So there's no need to keep trying to find something wrong?
Everything seem to be running ok other than mis reading of the ram.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about the problem, it's not a real problem.

One thing worth checking. Go Start>Run and type services.msc

Then look for a service called WMI Performance Adapter. Normally it's off and startup type is manually. Set it to automatic and start it. Then reboot your computer. It's a service that provides information to various system requests about your machine. Normally you don't need it, it's more a handy tool for say inventory tracking services in a work network.

However if it won't start or gives you errors that could be part of the problem why things are reporting badly.

The other place, if you want to check is in start>Programs>accessories>System Tools>system Info and see what that says.

But overall it's not a problem, just a minor tick.

It shows 1,200MB which is why I post this it's wrong to.
The event log is ok no errors
But if it just a tick I can live with it everything else is ok
