dowloader menace
After I start the computer, when I switch on the broadband modem and get connected to internet, automatically a highspeed download/upload starts. I am unable to know what is happening. On virus scan 'dowmloader' worm was found and it was removed. But that does not stop the download/upload activity which consumes the full bandwidth. How to identify which application is doing this and how to stop that? Can somebody help me to find a cure to this please?

That sounds tricky, but let's see what we can do. Welcome to Icrontic.
Step 1:
At first, download HJTInstall to your Desktop.
- Double click HJTInstall.exe to install it.
- By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
- Click on Install.
- It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
- Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
- Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
- Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Step 2:
After that, please scan your compu with the Kaspersky Online Scanner (Internet Explorer only)
Click on Accept
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
- The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
- Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
- Now click on Scan Settings
- In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
- Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
- Scan Options:
- Scan Archives
- Click OK
- Now under select a target to scan:
- Select My Computer
- This will program will start and scan your system.
- The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
- Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
- Now click on the Save as Text button:
- Save the file to your desktop.
- Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Step 3:Scan Mail Bases
Please post the contents of the HijackThis and the Kaspersky logs. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for the help.
Sairam
Can you please give me the procedure for removal of this menace.
Thanking you,
Sairam

There are bad malware there; luckily most of them are in Norton quarantine. Before we deal with infected files on your computer, I'd like to warn about BitRoll. BitRoll is not safe BitTorrent client as it installs malware. For more information, click here. I recommend to uninstall BitRoll immediately.
I don't see a firewall running on your system. Please make sure the Windows built in firewall is on.
After that, please do the followings...

Thanks for great help,
regards,
Sairam
I did further checks as per your instructions and I present them here. Before that I would like to inform you that I have installed and cleaned virus using Kaspersky, since in the first online check lot og virus was found.
I used ATF Cleaner. I did a system scan with HijackThis. Checked the boxes next to all the entries listed and fixed them. Then I ran OTMoveIt2, copied the file paths and asked for movement. It's log file is appended here. It did not find files to move because of prior cleanup by Kaspersky probably.
Then I scanned the computer with SUPERAntiSpyware. It's log file is added here.
Finally I have run HijackThis, and I am posting it's log file.
After all this, the problem has gone from my pc and I only hope that it does not reappear. What is your further advice? I request you to givr me tips to keep my pc healthy in future. I once again thank you for all the help given.

Thanks,
Sairam
That's good to hear! Very well done.
Step 1:
SUPERAntiSpyware found one trojan:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLH9JKD1Q8.EXE
Please find and remove this file, if it's present (remember empty the trash can after deleting).
Step 2:
Your Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 and save it to your desktop.
- Scroll down to where it says "JJava Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5...allows end-users to run Java applications".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
- Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
- Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step 3:I don't see a firewall running.
It is critical that you use a firewall to protect your computer from hackers. We don't recommend the firewall that comes built into Windows. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, it doesn't block anything at all outbound, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. Since most malware accesses the registry and can disable the Windows firewall, it's preferable to install one of these excellent third party solutions:
Comodo
Zone Alarm
Sunbelt Kerio PF
Step 4:
Next we remove all used tools.
- Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
- Click the CleanUp! button.
- Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
- If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
- The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt2 attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Clean up System Restore
You can find instructions on how to disable and enable System Restore from these guides:
Disable And Enable System Restore
Windows XP System Restore Guide
Make Your Internet Explorer More Secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the tools menu and then click on Options
- Click once on the "Security" tab
- Click once on the "Internet" icon so it becomes highlighted
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the "Download signed ActiveX" controls to Prompt
- Change the "Download unsigned ActiveX" controls to Disable
- Change the "Initialize and script ActiveX controls" not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the "Launching programs and files in an IFRAME" to Prompt
- Change the "Navigate sub-frames across different domains" to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Note that Internet Explorer is not the most secure browser. There are safer (and better) alternatives available like Opera and Firefox.Keep Your System Up to date
It is imperative that you keep your Windows, Antivirus, and other softwares up to date. Otherwise you are not protected against new threats and your system is vulnerable and unsafe. Update your Antivirus software at least once a week, and visit Microsoft Windows Update site regularly.
Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
