Printer

edited March 2008 in Science & Tech
I would like to know if I can take my USB printer and some how turn it into a network printer using my USB cable, maybe getting a USB to RJ45 adapter or some thing on that line, thanks for all your help. I know I can get a print server but for the price of those I can get a new printer so looking for a cheaper way. PS I have a router with a print server in it but it takes RJ45 connection.

You can "share" your printer on a network and let other users print on it. I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to accomplish here but if its for your home or something similar I think just sharing your comp would work the easiest.

Is there any reason that you can't just set up the printer on one PC and then network to the printer via your PC's that are connected by the router?

I want to use my printer from other computers when my computer is off.

So I can convert my USB to a RJ45 to plug into my router and it will work.

I haven't done it before but I don't see why not. The converter will give you a female ethernet port which you should then be able to run an ethernet cable from, to your router.

Just putting one of these adapters to convert to usb is not gonna do it. As I see it, these cards are basically just network adapters that need drivers like every other card.

You will need some kind of printer server to make the printer available to your network. Either run a dedicated machine like suggested above or get a usb printer server like on of these.

Yeh, that's what you need is a print server. They run around $50.

I think he wants to utilise the one he already has.
