How did this happen?

I lost an Imperian, even though there were 0 defenders? How?

I had the same thing once, attacked with 10 phalanxes, they had no defense or soldiers but none of them came back.

Wall and villagers can kill troops. Doesn't happen when you send several hundreds and larger.

I thought 50 would be enough to fend off a stray cat or two, but I didn't think villagers were armed with sniper rifles.

    base defence
caused by walls, residence/palace & trapper i think.
higher levels of each make even higher base defence

but if you were to send 200 troops to that person you'd lose none.

    think of it this way:
send one troop: he'll run into a wall and die
send more than one, his friends tell him not to

if the wall is bigger, then the urge to run into it grows, and thus more troops are needed to convince him not to.

and if troops are there, the base defence adds to their defence.
since its enough to kill one of 50 on its own, add 1000 defending troops and the bonus is the same as 100 extra troops or so
