Right now I live in a dorm and we currently have a wireless router feeding 4 computers, more if someone gives us money. But anyway I want to set it up as more of a network I can administrate. I want it set up so everyone connected is in a network with file sharing. I also have a spare computer that I want to set up as a central file server. So how do I go about doing this? There are 2 computers with vista and the rest have xp. I have xp professonal for the server. so how do I set all this up? I sorry if no one understands what I mean I know computer hardware and local software but I know nothing about networking.

I have some more questions. Are there any free KVM over ip programs out there? This server will be close to the router witch has no computers near it and I dont want to intall a monitor and whatnot with it.

UltraVNC will solve your KoIP issue. As for the central server, just share a drive and map the drive into everyone's PC and have the drive remap at logon. Tada! Everyone can access the files.

Thrax has it covered. You really don't want to do more then that since you aren't really running a server and you don't really want to force that kind of environment on anyone. Just setup your spare 'fileserver' as any other machine and put a large shared drive on it.

Then to make sure everyone can share nicely with it make sure that everyone's computer is setup with the same workgroup name that's all you really need to do. If you want you can add in a user account onto the server for each person that's connecting to it, but you really have no need for that.

Also you could hook a printer up to it and share that out as well.

right, put everyone on the same workgroup (change 'workgroup' or 'mshome' to 'dorm123' or whatever) and browse for shared folders. You can use remote desktop to log into the file server.

I got it all setup and it works But I wanted to know if there was a way to do something. My roomate has vista and when he opens network places he sees everything connected. He saw the server connected before i could even acess it. Is there anyway i could set it up to do that? Right now when I go to network places all i can see are the shared folders on the other computer and only computers with the same workgroup name. My roomates vista computer has a different workgroup name be he can still see everyone.
