I have my first settler, not sure if I need to send it somewhere for safekeeping and secondly where to look to go to for second village. Have only been attacked once by welshlass78.
Depends; are you confident you could get it out in time if you have an incoming attack? If not, you might consider sending it to Roadblock (my safest and probably closest village) or the outpost (long haul).

Roadblock 13 hours away. Going to keep in village and send 3 up later to the outpost - Saracen suggested I go there.
