Email Alerts from Server (without mail server?!)

I've just followed this guide

http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=266&articleType=ArticleView&articleId=143

And probably wasted my time!...

Our server is a file server and we run SQL off it, no mail server, no exchange.

Simply putting in an email address at the end - I can't see how on earth the server is going to send the email!!

It would be quite nice if I could get these e-mails...

1. Do you think it has a cats chance in hell of working?! (ill find out this time tomorrow for certain)
2. Assuming it doesn't how can I get it to e-mail me? - bear in mind this is a 'would be nice' situation so if it requires installing a bunch of stuff and reconfiguring the server and loads of downtime is involved etc then I think I can live with RDP'ing to the server every morning!

It has to have some kind of smtp engine on it to send out emails. Usually in cases like this the program that is sending the mails has the built in smtp engine. Look at most desktop computers they aren't mail servers outlook acts as their smtp engine.

So in cases like this you need to tell the program at some point how to send mail, usually it's just a case of filling in the smtp server and possibly the account info.

Now that guide is for Small Business Server, which is a bundled server that has exchange built into it. Are you runing SBS on this box?

I am running sbs2003 on this server yes, however, exchange is not used, its installed but we do not use it.

Would it not make sense to uninstall exchange if it's not being used? Probably a security hole.
