edited April 2008 in Science & Tech
Have a 5 yr old computer that has Window XP Home on it. Have not needed to "login" with password for years. It has always gone right to the desktop. Now all of a sudden it wants me to log in and i no longer have a clue what the password was. Any help? OR will i need to reinstall the operating system.

If it's a 5 year old machine, a reinstall is probably in order anyway, just because after 5 years windows is usually pretty much due for a reinstall so that would be my vote.

However there are ways to find a password such as by using tools like this.

If you are not using the Administrator user account and it is not passworded you can reboot into safe mode, log in as Administrator, and remove the password for any other user account.

To boot into safe mode, reboot and press F8 BEFORE the windows loading screen and select "safe mode" from the list you are presented with.

Well, tried one of purchased products and it failed to work. Guess i'll spend some time reformatting and reinstalling...This computer is one of the kids that are networked for gaming so its not like there is any special information on it anyway.
    thanks..
