The mouse moved by itself

Today when I surfed the web, out of a sudden, the mouse started to move by itself. It didn't move in any senseful way, just slowly and strangely in the direction to the upper-right corner, while I didn't do anything with the mouse except holding it (but not moving it), at least I think I held it, but I'm not sure, observing what happened. However, when I took control of the mouse again with my hand, I worked normally. I tried to re-create the strange event again, but didn't succeed.

Could this have occurred "naturally", i.e no malware or pranks being involved? At least nothing (else) appeared fishy. Or am I paranoid?

This can happen in optical/laser mice if the surface isn't 100% level or if the user has picked the mouse up so it sits at a slight angle under their hand. If it happens again, try to take notice of the surface/positioning of the mouse.
