data back up help (acronis)

hello,
Lately I tryed to back up my data using acronis home 11 (back up suite). Back uping OS partition worked flowlessly and compression ratio is great, but I experience a problem in backing up data - acronis just freezes. I have 4 HDDs 1000gb - spanned in one volume 4TB. I understand that backing up 300gb ( that's all I have for now) may take a while, so I tried to back up music first ( only 29gb) - with no luck- acronis still freezes.
what might be the problem? And what other software I should try if the problem is with acronis. Offcores I could use partition back up instead - but that whould be meaningless - as spanned volume may ( and eventualy will) fail, + I may add additional HDDs later- anyway partition back up is not an option...I need data back up...
what's matters most for me is good compression ratio and maybe aheduled back up. And offcores smart recovery - so I could recreate folder structure.
please help :)
thank you!

Your not backing up the data to the same volume that it exists on are you? Like backing up your D: drive to your D: drive? That can cause problems because it can't get a good lock on the drive, especially if you have it in a spanned volume.

    offcores not! :)
besides 4 TB and the one with OS (2 partitions: 100 for OS and 200 for everithing else) ive got another 3 HDDs - 320 gb, 260 gb and old ATA 160 gb (which still works for some reason unlike 2x320gb new HDDs that i lost in 2 month after purchase). i belive i got plenty of space to back up my data - if it wont be enougth ill buy another hard drive later....
acronis have pretty good compression ratio - then it states campression ratio as 65% less than the original - it really gives about 75~80%.
but...for now it fails to back up data - only partition back up works...i dont know why...

So you have 8 harddrives in this thing? You crazy monkey.

So how much actual data are you trying to backup (before compression) and how big is the drive you are trying to back it up onto? It's easier to compress a partition then it is to compress individual data files.

well actually i can connect only 6 at a time :P right now...maybe ill get SATA extention card later (and a bigger case...HUGE one...).
right now i have around 500 ~ 600 gb (i didnt copy all of the data from the other HDD yet...so iam not sure how much i have in total) but i believe ill fill the 4 TB prety soon. for back up i planed to use 320gb hdd and 250gb hdd for now. i believe it wont be enought for 4 TB - but then again - then there be the need i'll get another (big!)HDD ...:)..
anyway - can acronis actualy back up spanned volume?? (as a partion - since data back up doesent work...). though i still preffer data back up (i guess?) in case ill change configurations (iam actually very new to data back up - but i believe i can't recreate a partition if i'll create a new spanned volume . maybe add more disks and what not...- can i?)...i know its not advised to create spanned volume ...but i just did :)...coz its nicer to have one big huge 4TB volume - with everything in it - video music documents (instead of 6 ~ 8 drives)...and i dont mind it to fail from time to time - only if i could back up the data...
P.S. i asume the problem is with acronis... maybe i should try another version...

I' don't know enough about Acronis to know why it's not doing data backups for you, normally it just works as long as your destination has enough data to hold the source data. It could be the spanned volumes is giving it some grief, I just don't know.
