You mean the icons that are in the part near your clock?

You can't turn them off, if there are programs there that you don't want you can uninstall them and it'll remove the icons. But you can't just turn them off.

Those programs are assigned to start when Windows starts. You can prevent this by running MSCONFIG, going to the "startup" tab and unchecking the programs you don't want to run when Windows starts. The programs are still on your computer, but the next time you boot, you'll have to manually start those programs if you need them. Some of those programs might be needed for Windows to work properly, so make sure you know what you disable.

If you want to set windows to collapse that list (it provides a button to expand it), or set the individual application to never show in the taskbar, go to:

(XP) Control Panel --> Taskbar and Start menu --> click Customize and check Hide inactive icons

(Vista I would need to do form home, but it provides the same ability in roughly the same location within Windows)

That statement is actually not true all the items under the Startup Tab can be disabled without having any effect on windows. I actually suggest you disable all of them besides your antivirus There are exceptions that will stop certain 3rd party programs from running but it will never stop windows from booting up.

Services on the other hand will. I don't suggest that beginning users mess around with services to increase speed unless they have help or know what they are disabling.

I say uninstall it if you're not using it. Norton sucks and consumes more resources than it's worth, versus it; Avast dominates. Yahoo messenger is junk. C+ and Java, right? Use pidgin. It's much more stable than it used to be; and supports all other messengers. But whatever you do; make sure system restore is running.
