IRC programs

Hey all, I was wondering what IRC programs you all use.
I was using MIRC and the 30 days tryout is over.
Now it keeps opening up IE (which I don't want) to register for $20.
Which I would have no problems buying.
If I hadn't been pretty much out of work for a yr now.
If I try to use it without registering it tells me my IC Hawk name is already in use.
Anyway, I uninstalled it and was trying to get Trillian to work for IRC.
Better said than done....... What a PITA!
It's a nightmare trying to get it to work for IRC.
I think I got it connected (it says connected) but there's no chat window.
FYI.. I have all the IM programs off. AOL IM, MSN IM, etc.
I can't get it to show a chat window for IRC.
So, Is there a free IRC program out there that can be set up easily?
I'm about to put a boot through the front of this computer I'm so frustrated.
Bad thing is I'm in a time critical situation on having an IRC program.

Hawk, you can continue using mIRC past the 30 day trial. Just change the username slightly - the fact that it says "IC Hawk is in use" doesn't have anything to do with mIRC.

You'll have to deal with the nag screen asking you to buy the program, but it's pretty easy to deal with, especially if you need the program right now.

I've been using that handle for a while now though.
And it doesn't let me connect to Rizon, saying that name is already in use.
I was just using it last night.
As far as using it past the trial date ...
It starts and connects IE for registering every time I start it.
And the window it brings up in IE says hit the button to register, and it's a paypal for $20.

    So... just close IE. :p

If you didn't register your username it's entirely possible someone else is using it. Again, the name issue has nothing to do with mIRC. You can connect with any other name.

Just use ICHawk or IC_Hawk or IcronticHawk or anything else.

Like keebs said - ignore the nag screen. Just close IE.

Guess I'll have to do that until I can get something else that works.
Durn IE loads tracking cookies everytime it pops up.
Spybot removes them when i run it but it's a pain.
Thnx for your help guys. Appreciate the input.

    Pidgin, Trillian

Both are multi-client, I prefer their standard looks over AIM/MSN/mIRC/etc. anyway.

    xChat

Another favorite, worlds cleaner than mIRC IMO. Linux version is free, Windows client is $20. Can be 'acquired' etc. etc.

    With Trillian preferances:

    Go to Identities and Connections
    Add new Connection
    Select IRC

    First 2 boxes:
    #icrontic
    and
    irc.rizon.net:7000/icrontic
Then fill in the rest yourself

Then click a very subtle white bubble on the trillian called "IRC"
    Trillian>Connections>Manage connections>Select IRC & click connect

Go back to trillian and click the white bubble again, select join new channel and type #icrontic

then you should be set.... Way to keep it simple, Trillian

Pidgin works perfectly for me once you figure out what it's doing, and it's 1000% freeeeeeeeeee.

If you don't want to use the original mIRC client, HydraIRC is a good alternative. It is free and it feels like regular mIRC.

I use IceChat. It's free as far as I know and quite easy to use. After you have set up your channel once, just doubleclick the channel, and it connects. I'm very happy with it.
