half life bug

So I've been playing Half Life for the first time in a couple years, and in the level "We'Ve Got Hostiles" when you take the big elevator up to the surface to deal with the marines, there is a huge bug in the game.

The "loading" sign comes up, and when it stops the elevator freezes, and you start taking hits like the elevator is crushing you or something when it clearly isn't. You're also frozen in place. I recall this bug when I played last time, but I don't remember how I fixed it. I think smashing the keyboard in a certain way enough times does it... that worked one time, but by then I was down to 32 health and the first marine got me.

Know how to fix this POS?

Other issue: sometimes escaping out of the game and going back in or loading a second game causes a blanks screen with the version number at the center of it to appear while I can hear the game going on. Know anything about that either? Oh, and then there's the cursor flickering in the middle of the screen sometime while I play...

Ah ha! I found the quick on some random site on the net. You have to stand in the middle of the elevator and jump just before the "loading screen appears apparently  Well it works anyway.

That does leave the blank screen and blinking cursor issues though, if anyone has an idea.

or you can update half life to the latest version. That never happens to me. *shrug*

For me, all the elevaters, or anything you happen to be standing on thats moving up or down, does that. I figured out that whole jumping thing on my own though [gloat].

I have the latest version, too.

It is a very common bug in Half-Life. Jumping will get you around the problem. But if you do not jump in time and end up stuck...hit the spacebar and the shift keys alternately and quickly. Many times it will free you. The most common stickey places are when riding a lift through a map change. So whenever I get on a lift or elevator the first thing I do is quick save and then stand in the middle of the lift and get ready to jump.

As far as the blank screen with the version number , I hope somebody has an answer to that. When I first started playing ( years ago ) It was never a problem. I think it started happening when I went to XP pro from 98se but I am not exactly sure. But it really bugs me.

Well at least I know it isn't something weird I did now :) I have the game installed with all current updates (I think) on Windows XP, and I also have the Counter-Strike free mod installed (not using it though right now).

It's really annoying having to restart the program every time I escape out of the game.

wow, i've never had that problem. what version of halflife do you have? i know i've got the game of the year edition and never had any bugs in it. maybe its code thats not getting patched in all the updates.

Thats the thing though, they are patching it for Counter Strike, TFC and other mods, and ignoring the game, consequently when people go to play the game they find bugs that have been caused by fixes to other things....

I tried to get HL installed when my nephews were visiting last summer. Nothing but heartache...

Couldn't find the proper patches (I have the original), couldn't get it to run right, and wasted too much time trying.

I see your point. On the other hand, most games are touted as having mucho replay value. They could at least have waited until after HL2 comes out to abandon the original. I will probably give in and buy HL2 anyway, since I've recently gotten back into gaming, but I resisted the idea based on the fact that it was so delayed and HL1 was given up on early.

Sounds great prof, let me know if you need a hand finding the links and such.

Also, you now need to go through Steam in order to go multiplayer, it's a bit of a pain but it works pretty well once you're going, I can help with that as well.

I have the latest patch V. 1.1.10 on disk if you can not find it. It is about 86 mb unzipped. so I can't email it. I could put it on my website if needed. Let me know if you need it.

Before I try it again, are we talking about the original HL? I know they came out with several expansions/variations. What's the popular online version these days? What are you guys playing, TBonZ?

I have the original HL; my problem was that I could find patches to go from xx.6 to xx.9, or whatever, but not enough patches in between (I think I may have 1.0, I know I bought it within days of it's release) to get all the way up to the fully patched version.

Yeah it's the regular HL but you do need to get the updates. I'm sure it'a a real pain getting it going considering I bought my copy a couple of years after release. Try this link if you don't already have the latest update download manager to get all the updates.

    http://www.sierra.com/downloadfile.do?mediaid=5507

Then you need to download Steam it's the front end client for which connects you to all the servers, get it here but try and only get a half-life only download because it's significantly smaller than the full install.

Yeah, I was referring to original Half Life, Game of the Year edition with patch 1.1.10 installed.

TBonz - I will be very interested in that once next semester starts and I have finished playing the one-player through again to hone up a little. I don't want to be totally pathetic my first time in multiplayer ;)

I have/had the version screen bug thing.. what a pain. I just bought the Platinum Collection yesterday.. anyway, I was looking for an answer and found this thread... so I found and downloaded the latest patch (mentioned) 1110 (As of Oct 20, 2004 - today) It didn't help.

So I messed around a bit, and found a solution, at least for me.

I was using Direct3d at 1024x768, and simply switched to using OpenGL at 1024x768. Problem gone. I can excape to the menu and go back to playing all I want now. I just thought I'd mention it in case it helps someone else.

    Cheers

Half-Life has a terrible D3D implementation. It's about 40% slower than OpenGL. I would never consider using it again. ;)

I just tried your fix, and it works ! Cool ! I did notice that run speed was much faster as well.

Good to hear. :) I didn't notice a difference in run speed, but I wasn't really looking for it. I have turned up the resolution to 1600x1200 (try THAT in Doom 3!) ... runs fine on my MSI 6800 Ultra.

I did notice once it went wonky when I alt-tab'ed to windows, and I had to kill it, but it was an isolated incident and all else is still well. (partaining to the game, at least, of course) ;)

Me? I didn't even know Steam existed until after I bought the Plat. Edtn... and I got Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Team Fortress, and Counter Strike in the package.. (whatever those are..) for $40 CDN I figured it was an ok deal..

What's the difference between the original Half Life and the Half Life they remade for Source..? (ok, you say it has the HL2 engine.. but I mean difference that you can see and stuff..)

    Cheers

BIG diffrence! better graphics and effects. The story is exactly the same (Valve made a point not to change it) but the diff in graphics quality is huge!

You also get the valve "back catalog", meaning the silver edition also comes with everything already on steam (including everything you just listed).

Here are some before-and-after shots of the original Half Life, and Half Life:Source. I'll leave you to figure out which of the two shots is of the new game. ;)

EDIT: Well, I can't seem to find them at the moment (I scoured through HL2.net's forums for them), but trust me, it's a much better deal to get the Silver Edition of Half Life 2 through Steam, than it is to buy the Half Life "Platinum Edition" + Half Life 2.

The silver package is both cheaper, and you get much more than you would otherwise!

I just started playing Half-Life again before the big release of Half-Life 2. I do remember having that same problem with when you hit the esc button and try to go back into the game. To fix this I had to switch my display mode from OpenGL to Driect3D (Or whichever one it was) Hope that helps!
