wireless network connection with laptop

edited June 2008 in Science & Tech
Hi,

I'm new to the forum; I'm searching for some help with my laptop. I've looked through several threads where folks had trouble connecting to the internet and followed the suggestions posted.

Here's what I did:

I installed and ran the HiJackThis.exe. The results are listed below. Also, I've installed /ran WinsockxpFix.exe, Spyware Doctor, ZonedOut (though, since I can't connect to the internet, I can't really use it).

I tried to repair the connection and got the following error message: Could not repair wireless network connection. Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: renewing your IP address.<o>:p></o>:p>

There are 3 network adapters listed:
1394 net adapters
3Com 10/100 Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter
Cisco Systems 350 PCMCIA wireless LAN adapter

None have a yellow ! or red X next to them. I used to use the internal modem to connect to the internet but that doesn't work now either. The wireless card is an external card that fits into a port at the side of the laptop. The status light flashes green intermittedly while the activity light flashes yellow prety much non-stop. There is no on/off switch on it.

I tried ipconfig /all as well as /release and /renew. I tried pinging Below are the messages:

I have stopped/ restarted the Wireless Zero Configuration. No luck.

I know I've given a lot of info here, but I've been working on this problem for a while now and have tried just about everything I could think of with no luck. If anyone has any ideas on what I can try next, I'd be very happy to hear from you.

Thanks in advance,

tl

To much of your hijack log got turned into garbage to diagnose it.

However what is the problem you are having when trying to connect, can you see the wireless network, can you get an ip etc...etc...etc...

    Hi,

Thanks for taking a look. I can not get an IP address to be assigned when I do ipconfig /renew. It shows up as 0.0.0.0. I can see the wireless network and it says I'm connected but then I get the error message that there is limited or no activity.

    Thanks,

Have you tried connecting your computer to the router through a LAN cable to make sure that it's handing out the IP information correctly?

What information do you get if you do an ipconfig /all

Looks to me like it's not getting an IP address. On a wireless connection with XP I have seen this happen with the windows firewall switched on. I would suggest (as you are behind a router), temporarily turning off the Windows firewall and attempting the IPConfig /renew again. You should also try the aforementioned ethernet connection to confirm your router is correctly returning an IP address from DHCP.

No, I never thought to try that. I will and let you know how it works out.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

OK. I turned of the firewall, unplugged the Ethernet cable from the laptop and did ipconfig /renew. Here's the error message:

So this mean the problem is with the wireless only, right? While I'm glad I can at least connect to the internet wired, I'm concerned about the wired situation. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

So it's working by LAN but not by Wireless? Are you sure your router is handing out IP addresses?

You could cheat to confirm something.

Set a manual IP address on the wireless adapter. I would suggest something like:

    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.20
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    DNS Server. . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

You have to have the wireless connected and then set that as a manual IP address. See if that gets you anywhere.

Ok so your router is set to hand out DHCP addresses, this is good. But your wireless card is definitely not connecting to your router.

Do you have encryption or mac address filtering or anything like that turned on, on your router? If so I would suggest, for now, disabling any of those features so your wireless is full open on your router. You should then be able to connect to it with little difficulty. Once you can connect you can then go back through the process of locking things down.

Speaking of routers, what kind of router is this?

    Hi,

Dumb question: when you say I need to have wireless connected, you just mean that the wireless card is inserted in the laptop, right? Mine fits into a slot at the side of the laptop. It doesn't have a switch on it. The status light flashes green but the activity light flashes yellow.

I set up the info like you listed but no luck. The frustrating part is that according to the wireless info, the strength is 'excellent'. But the packets sent is like 115 but none are being received.

Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit). ACTIONTEC MI(OR 1?)424-WR REV D
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless. WIRELESS
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) WEP

I agree with kryyst. Turn off WEP and any other wireless security you may have configured. If you can pull an IP and connect with everything turned off, then start setting up the security again.

I don't know what mac address filtering is so I'm going to guess I don't have it turned on. :p

About encryption, I don't know how that was set up; the verizon guy did it.

How would I check (where to look, that is) on my laptop for these things?

    I've got an Actiontec router.

If WEP is enabled, you need to know what the WEP key or pass phrase is.

Here is a link to the manual for your router. actiontec_mi424wr_manual.pdf

If you go into your network properties and browse for available networks are you seeing your wireless network? I'm wondering if you aren't actually connecting to it at all. Having the wifi card plugged in isn't enough. You actually have to tell it to connect to a wireless network for the first time.

    Hi,

Yes, I do see my network. When I choose 'connect', it tries and tries to connect, but doesn't. When prompted for my WEP key, it just tries to to connect but no luck.

    thanks,

Have you tried disabling WEP in your router to see if you can connect?

What MrBill said (and we said already) Dissable any encryption settings you have in your router and see if you can connect. Then turn the encryption back on. From the sounds of things now you just have a bad WEP key, or you are trying to use a named wep key on one and and the long version on the other or something.

Is it deffinately WEP. I had problems on XP because I was using WPA2 which wasn't supported by the version of XP I had. My laptop was fine as that uses Vista. Do what Kryyst said and dissable all security. and try to connect. If that works then add a WPA encryption key.

I haven't read your manual for your router but most routers have a web page stored on the router where you can modify your settings. Plug your LAN cable in, open internet explorer and type your router IP. (192.168.1.1) This should open the page and you will need to enter a user name and password to access the router settings.

It may also be a problem with your driver for your wireless card. Check device manager to make sure it is installed properly and try downloading the latest driver for your card
