Laptop won't go past "Windows" screen

edited June 2008 in Hardware
Hey guys,
I have a laptop and it won't get past the "Windows" screen where it shows the progress bar and has the windows logo when I try to start it up. It cycles through that and starts back at the beginning again. I pulled up the setup menu and ran the hard drive tests it has and the tests passed. I appreciate any help...it's only about 1 1/2 years old so I don't think it should have any problems yet. Thanks.

Run a boot-time RAM test with Memtest (in our downloads section), then let us know what it finds.

Ok...I got it downloaded but for hte life of me I cannot figure out how to make the disc I need to run memtest. I copied the 4 things onto a CD and put it in my other comp that isn't running and it didn't work. My brother said to make it a bootable CD so I did that and it went directly to "DRDOS". I had no idea what to do there so I figured it was wrong. I clicked on the install file I downloaded and it said to enter destination drive and I put in E:\ and it didn't work. I clicked on Rawrite and it said to enter destination drive and again I put in E:\ and it didn't work. Please...a little more direction...I'm stupid...lol. Not tech savvy at all. Thanks for the help.

Recent news on my problem here. My brother took a look at the computer and didn't know how to run the Memtest either. He restored my computer to the file from last week (May 23). It loaded and is running well. I downloaded the new AVG 8.0 and it noticed a trojan and healed it. Is there anything else I should be concerned about or was the trojan probably what did it before? I don't know how I could have gotten the virus as I only visit a small number of sites which do not change week to week and I don't download anything on that computer. I just want to make sure there isn't a hardware problem with the computer or anything like that. Thanks a bunch guys.

just curious what to do here. It's been over a week...did you drop my case or are you just real busy. I can understand that. Just drop a quick line so I know to hold on though. Thanks

And that's how you burn an ISO, as the article Prime linked suggests you need to do.

This is extremely stereotypical behavior of a failing harddrive. We get laptop's and desktop's in at work more often than not with looping boots. At work we use a program called "spinrite" now, you do have to pay for this program legally, however im sure you know of another way to get it. Unless you know somebody who has purchased it, which would be even better. Idk if you remember the show "screensavers" on the good 'ole TechTV, but they did a segment on "spinrite", here is the video for information on the program...

Also, do run memtest as they suggested, the more diagnostic programs you can run at this point, the better.

    Good luck!
