Trojan? Worm?

I checked my hotmail account this morning and I notice that I've sent myself an email and have received several out of office replies and undeliverable messages for many people in my address book. People I wouldnt send emails to just because. I've deleted the email so I don't have any details yet on who/what I apparently told people to buy and mention my name on. So, now I need to figure out if it's my comp at home. It could be another comp or even my cell phone that started this, but I want to ensure that my home comp is safe.

    Hello RyanM84,

    Not seeing any infection here. have any of the scans you have done located any. One idea to be sure there would be to update McAfee, then reboot into Safe Mode (at startup tap the F8 key and select that from the menu) and run a full scan with McAfee then. Being sure to quarantine any items found as well (not delete though).


    Since the info is showing you do need to update that older and more vulnerable Java version there. When you have a chance Go here and download the latest version of Sun Java Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The current file name for that is jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe. I recommend you choose to download the "Windows Offline Installation" by clicking on that file to download it.

    When you have done that, Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall all versions Java/JRE (Sun Java Runtime Environment/J2SE Runtime Environment) and reboot. Then click that downloaded jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the latest Java version there, being sure to reboot after.

    Thank you for responding. Will take your advice and re-run a mcafee scan in safe. I've accessed my account from my computer and my father's computer, which, coincidentally had/has a smitfraud virus on it. Who knows what else is there...but I'm concerned that's where my troubles are - his computer.

    Also, I've had another email sent from my hotmail account. The email was sent to the few people I still have in an address book (removed 95% of them after the first attack).

    Here is the body of the email. Chinese good seller apparently noted for taking your wired funds and not delivering goods. I've not removed their email address right now because I think "sellers" like this that employ these types of tactics deserve to have their email address botted.

    I am hoping those addresses you posted are not actual links to potential malware sources - if these are please Edit your last post and remove them. There actually is a fairly big difference between using an email program on your computer, and a webmail account like Hotmail. A number of non-pc related issues could effect webmail accounts, including a compromised user account or even a rare instance of the webmail server having infection. But run a Safe Mode scan check with your existing anti-virus software. No infection showing right now, and if none is found by that then things are likely okay there.

    Thank you for your response. I do not believe the website to be a source for malware. I went to the site and they appear to sell computers, PDAs, etc. I have removed the link anyway.
    I'm going to do a search in safe mode tonight to see if I find anything. I don't believe anything will come up.

    Scan completed in safe mode. Nothing found. I will update my Java like you suggested too.
    I've got McAfee, TeaTimer and adaware SE for periodic scans. Can I do better or should I be doing something different?

    TeaTimer monitoring/blocking unrecognized registry changes is more a concept of the past, and may not really fit in with more updated security setups. But a solid idea would be to review the info Tony Klein covers Here for security planning.
