Source Mods are crashing at boot. Any ideas?
(I posted this on the steampowered forums as well, and have gotten no help yet. I copied and pasted it, so that's why it feels a little more "stiff" than how I usually write on here. Have a go at it, everyone.)
Hello everyone,
I've come across a terribly stressful problem with my source mods.
Recently, most 3rd party mods crash just before the menu for said mod loads. I'll see the background image for the menu, and a notice saying loading in the corner. Just before the menu items fade in, it throws an error:
"The Instruction at 0x referenced memory at 0x The memory could not be read"
Clicking OK closes the game, and that's that.
Now I've checked the common problems and FAQs, and nothing has helped me to find a solution. Here's why - I've been playing Half-Life2 through steam since it's release in 2004. In fact, I'm still using the same installation on the same hard drive. I've installed and played dozens of third party mods and I've never had any issues like this.
About a week ago, this just started happening. With Source Forts, specifically, is when I first noticed. It was strange, because I had literally played Source Forts the night before. I hadn't changed my hardware configuration, and no major changes in software either.
So most Steam FAQ's have been no help, because they assume the user has always had these problems. My problem cropped out of nowhere. AND it's not consistent. Some third party mods still work, others do not.
Erasing the mod folder and reinstalling doesn't fix the issue, and all first party games (TF2, HL2ep2, ect) work just fine.
Today I installed Age of Chivalry for the first time. I launched it, and joined a game without it crashing. Then my firewall popped up a message asking if I wanted to let GAMEOVERLAYUI.EXE have access (which is used for steam community). I hit YES, and went back into the game. To test, I closed the game and relaunched, and bingo, now it crashes before the menu loads.
So it's crashing JUST as the menu loads and the status reads either "Creating Sound Cache" or " the pop up that says press alt+tab to access steam community" One of those two items must be at fault.
I tried disabling steam community in game, and while this didn't remedy the problem, I did notice that I can play source forts if I erase the mod folder, reinstall it and reopen Steam. However, as soon as I close out of Source Forts and try to re-open it, it crashes again at the menu.
I went through and tested almost all of my mods. Here are the ones that work, and the ones that don't:
works:
zombie master
HL2 Cinematic Mod V4
Die in pain Rest in Peace
Dystopia
DayHard
Gmod 9
HL2 Smod
Kreedz Climbing
Project Valkyrie
Synergy
broken:
Zombie Panic: Source
Age of Chivalry
Battlegrounds 2
Hidden Source
Flipside
Goldeneye: Source
PVK II
I can't seem to find a pattern there at all.
Does anyone have any insight into this problem? I've searched google for hours, and no solution has appeared. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hurry and find the problem. I want to kill you in Hidden Source.
After that check the cache of all your games (Right click on the game and property's on the steam games menu).
If your still having the problem the only advice I can really give you is to post on the steam forums.
