Help choosing the right colors

I am working on a design for the website of an organization at my university and our official school color is #4A0010. This is a really dark maroon that I am having trouble finding 1 or 2 other colors to compliment it. I'm terrible with color and would like some suggestions for the more artsy here. If you have any suggestions on colors to go with this one, it would be greatly appreciated!

Gold and silver are the first that come to mind. After that there's brown and orange.
