BIG TROUBLE with Hacktool Rootkit

I need some help in a big way! I was working on my computer when I got a Norton Anitvirus message that I was being attacked by "Hacktool Rootkit" and that it could not eliminate threat. I opened up Norton, ran Live Update and started a scan.

I then went to empty my temp files (start>>run>>%temp%) and started getting an error message that I've gotten ever since that doesn't allow me to open any programs or take any of the steps that one would typically take before posting to this forum. (i apologize for that, i need help being able even run ATF clearn or creating a highjack this log...)

The error message I am getting says this: Program Error: explorer.exe has generated erros and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program. And error log is being created. There is a cancel button only.

I get this message no matter what I try to do - open a document, a program or ie...

Can anyone help me get started in defeating this menace. Much gratitude to follow...

    If you boot to Safe Mode, are you able to run HijackThis?
