DVD-Forum has agreed on the new standard but when will this new technology become available?

It would be stupid to buy a dvd recorder if the new standard is just around the corner.
I doubt that it is right around the corner, but who knows?

I'd guess probably 12-18 months.. Expect them to be ~$700 on launch. Then expect to wait 4 more months for players, than ~4 years for media proliferation.

But, since Sony didn't get their way, expect Blu Ray in 11-17 months just so they can say they were first. ;D

It's not like you're going to buy a DVD burner now, and go "Oh crap! My DVDs are worthless now!"

My dad is thinking of buying a DVD-R.
There is an Aopen DRW4410 on sale for $116.
That is half the normal price here in Denmark.

But it wouldn't be a good idea if new technology is soon to come.
But I guess it is safe to buy a DVD-R.

I have my eyes set on a Plextor DVD-R but I do not have the money to pay for it. ;D
EDIT: The Plextor sure gets a beating in another thread.
