Computer Wont Shut Down

edited April 2009 in Science & Tech
Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem shutting down my PC. The shut-down control in the start menu doesn't work anymore, therefore, I used to click the log-off button that gave me the shut down option again, and that worked, but now when I click log off on the log-off button comes up. I used to hit the manual restart button on the PC and that would allow for the shut off option to come up again - that worked for a while, but now it doesn't anymore and I'm forced to unplugged my PC in order to turn it off. Prior to not being able to turn off my computer the normal way, I would get the notice "Other people are logged on to this computer, shutting down may cause them to lose information. Do you still want to shut down?" Well, of course I chose shut down. However, it seems no matter what I do, including installing a new "paid" as opposed to "free" virus program - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WORKS!! The problem has only gotten worse. I installed a new updated version of windows, and that helped only temporarily - and I had to uninstall and re-install it several times to be able to turn of the computer. Each time I re-installed it an automatic update came up (which I suppose is the virus from a hijacker). I turned off automatic updates to no avail. I'm presently using Windows XP platform with Microsoft Office 2007. What if anything, can I do to resolve this problem?icon9.gificon8.gif

Sounds to me like this is a software problem. You can go to account control and delete any extra account that my be there, like a guest account. It sounds like a process is corrupt, one that windows can't close so it sits there waiting for a reply from the process. If it were me, at this point, with the symptoms you have, I would make sure all my files are backed up then wipe the drive and do a clean install of XP. Do turn on auto updates, though. And do make sure you use the most current free antivirus programs you know are good.
