Best Colo/Dedicated Server Place?
Hey,
A bud [or 2] and I are going to launch a webhosting company in early January. I found a decent server with the following specs:
-Celeron 1.7ghz
-256mb ram
-80gb HDD
-1000gb xfer/month
-cPanel + redhat 9
-10mbps connection + 5IP's
for around $79/mo
But one of the friends has a server: It's a tower with:
-2.4ghz P4 [I'm pretty sure]
-1gb Ram
-250gb HDD
So we'd like to use that. Does anyone know of any good colo places that can host towers with a decent connection for ~ or less than $100/mo?
Either that or a dedicated server that's cheaper than above.

But is a 512kb/sec connection good enough for a web + mush hosting company.
[btw, mush is a text-based telnet game thingy.]
1U - 4U Rack Space
1 Power Outlet
2 IP Addresses
512 Kb/s Bandwidth
Free Cold/Soft Reboots
Discounted CPANEL/WinPanel License
Live Bandwidth Reports
MAE-West OC3 Bandwidth
Free Off Server Backup
Is my speed restricted? Or is it my bandwidth? Approx. how much bandwidth can I get with this/mo?
You never got that quote from route256, LOL.
Usually, that's your 95th usage, sometimes its a hard cap. You have to contact them to see. The more bandwidth you have behind your box, the more its going to cost. It's alot cheaper to give you 512K and not let you burst multi megabits than to let you fully burst and still only charge the 95th.
I think we've found our place:
FDCServers.net
All for $99/mo. They even pick up your server and will pay for 2nd Day FedEx to their datacenter. Free setup too.
You do get what you pay for.
But read their forums, alot of complaints centered around quality, speed, and reliability.
There is a long list of things you can do to a network to cut costs. We don't do them because our clients are willing to pay for the quality. Unfortunatly, the only way most clients can tell the difference is bad experiences. Over 75% of our clients are people that left a budget hosting company because of support and service related problems. Yet, our last survey, not one single section scored less than completely satisfied from any client. *shrug* You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink.
But, for business hosting, you don't have alot of choices. Not at anything near a reasonable rate. You can't afford to have a problem, and not have it resolved ASAP. I know very few companys that are serious about business hosting. Rackspace is the first on everyones mind, then a long list of guys like us that aren't as well advertised. Good luck in your adventures. I spent 2 years looking for a hosting company before I opened one up myself because it was not possible to find quality at a fair price.
Rob, so about that commission check
I hope they don't host their own website
