Problem with "main display adapter"

edited December 2003 in Hardware
hey. I just got a NF7-S mobo from newegg and i just intalled it yesterday. When i boot up windows my mai display setting are 16 colors and a resolution of 640X??? (i forgot the number since i never use this setting). I checked my display setting and it says it an unknown device. In the system properties it says that the standerd display adaptor is working fine and the problem lies in the main display adapter. Is this my video card? I have a stock Radeon 9500. Im not sure how much this info can help you because im im in school right now and im trying to remember off the top of my head right now. I be happy to give you more info if you need when i get back from school.

You haven't installed the drivers for your card yet.. YOu have to install drivers for all hardware in your system.

Here's the driver for your card:

Ill try that but I cant reinstall any drivers for my video card right now because when i do it says he drivers are not compatable with my display. I have the catalyst 3.6 and 3.7 for the 9500 but both dont work.

Does it say something like "Stop - these drivers have not been signed, blah blah blah"?

Go ahead and use the driver. Who knows better what video card you really have: You? Or Windows?

No when i try to intall catalsyt it says, and i qoute(ahem) : "This display driver is not compatable with the display adaptor installed on you system". After i push ok, the installation closes. In the device manager it says my display adaptor is running the Radeon 9500 driver and says the display adaptor is working fine, but the problem lies in the "Main display adaptor". I talked with someone today at school and he said that it was probably my card that was messed because AGP cards have a tendency to get messed when puting them in thier slot, escpicially on generic boards. I told him i didnt have a generic board, but i think he was b/s me cuz everything has the capability to become messed when put in. This display problem is my major concern right now, and my other problems with my cd-roms and usb not working ill worry about someother time(there are probably missing drivers too). I appriciate any help you can give me.

    Fine.

Uninstall your video card via the device manager, and use cat 3.9.

Is this on a fresh install or an existing install with a new mobo?

madmat: existing install with new mobo(like i have done before, except this time i guess i messed up.)
Thrax:Whats with the sarcastic tone? but beyond that, i fail to see how your suggestion would work. i mean i've unistalled it and tried to put in 3.6, but it didnt let me. Then i did the same but with 3.7, and guess what? It also didnt let me. Why would 3.9 be different?
i guess i sound like a whinning kid, but u would too if you had this problem for a week but never had time to work on it untill today so you wished you could fix today because using crappy a computer(the one im using now, the family comp) is getting to your nerves.

You're supposed to do a fresh or repair installation.

    No sarcastic tone intended.

    I apologize for that.

If you were using a newer version of an existing chipset (say going from a KT333 to a KT400A or from an Nforce 2 to Nforce2 ultra) you could get away with that because the IDE controllers and the like are similar, same goes for the AGP interface but going from one chipset maker based board to another will do just what you've had happen to you.
If there's stuff you need to save you can boot into safe mode and uninstall every single device in the dev manager and reboot and hopefully XP will allow you to use the cd-roms after redetecting all the components so that you can install the proper chipset drivers and use a cdrw drive to save what you need.

Have you checked your BIOS settings to make sure the video settings are compatible with your video card?

Thanks for the help. In my other mobo switchs i have gone to one KT chipset to another which would explain why they worked. I ended up going with a clean install, so i formated my hard drive. I did think about using my OLD OLD HD (2gig) as a "boot" by installing windows on it and then later pluggin in my existing HD to it. But i couldnt find where i stored it all those years back (1998). The only thing i miss are my mp3s, but oh well.
Thanks agian, late response, i know, but i have been busy with school and then finals so i really havent had time to be on the internet.
