Think I might have a new bug

I have an icon on my taskbar that resembles, and may very well be, a windows update icon. However, when I shut down my PC, there is no update icon on my shut down window. I'm afraid it may be a virus in disguise and I would like some help. removing it or finding out if it is a legitimate updater. Thank you.

    Hi,

    Please do the following...

    1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update7.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
      • Java(TM) 6 Update 3
      • Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

    2. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
        Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases

        [*]Click OK
[*]Now under select a target to scan:
          Select
        My Computer

[*]This will program will start and scan your system.
[*]The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
[*]Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
        • Now click on the Save Report As button:
        • Change Save as type: to Text file
        • Save this as Kaspersky scan to your Desktop

Computer is running fine, but that update icon that was the reason for my post is still on the taskbar. I also had a question. Should I be saving all these downloads (Kaspersky,ATF Cleaner, etc.) for future use? Anyway, here is the HijackThis log you requested.

        Hi,

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

        http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

        Please continue as follows:

        1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
        2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

        C:\ComboFix.txt
        New HijackThis log.

Also, if you could post a screen shot that would be helpful.

I'm running into a problem with the installation of the Windows Recovery Console. I followed the instruction for the dowload of the Windows XP Service Pack 2 as I do not have the CD. The instruction said to drag and drop the XP Service Pack icon onto the ComboFix icon. It also said that, by doing this, ComboFix would automatically instal th Recovery Console and creat that option upon reboot. I did so and the Recovery Console is not being installed. I haven't received a prompt saying so. Did I do something wrong? I don't think so. Is there another way?

        Hi,

Can you try once more please. It does work as I've just tried it.

Make sure that ComboFix.exe turns gray when the Windows XP file hovers over it.

Let me know the outcome please.

When I drag the XP icon over to the ComboFix icon and let go, the window to run ComboFix opens up. Is that supposed to happen?

        edited July 2008
Yes, but it won't perform a scan. It will just install the Recovery Console.
      • edited July 2008
Still think I'm doing it wrong. Do I run it after turning off my Av and firewall?
      • edited July 2008
Sorry about the double reply, but that option that the instructions said would be created for the Recovery Console never happened. I don't think I'm doing it right.

Don't worry about ComboFix.exe. Can you post a screen shot of the icon please.
      • edited July 2008
I have no idea how to do that.

Sorry .... double reply again. I don't remember what I did, but it worked. The Recovery Console was installed. I ran ComboFix and HijackThis. I tried to submit both logs in one reply, but they are too long. The ComboFix log is really long but I can fit the HijackThis log in this reply. I don't think the ComboFix log will fit as the reply can only be 50000 characters at most. That log appears to be much longer. I'm sending the HijackThis log now. Please advise as to how I might send the Combofix log.

You can attach the ComboFix log by using the Manage Attachment option in New Reply.

To take a screen shot, press PrtSc on your keyboard. Note: it may have extra writing on the same button. Please attach this too.

Ok. I have attached the ComboFix log. I tried to do the screen shot thing, but after I press the Print Screen key, my computer doesn't prompt me to do anything else. Do I need to retrieve the screen shot from somewhere? Did my computer even do anything when I pressed the key? I'm not sure.

Sorry, my fault. Once you've pressed PrtSc, you will need to go into Paint (or any photo editing program) and paste it there. Save it and then upload here.
      • edited July 2008
I'm having difficulty with the screen shot. I press PrintScreen, I go to paint (which I've never used before), and I just don't know what I'm doing. When I get to Paint, it opens up with a white rectangle. It appears to me that this is what I'm supposed to paint in. The Print Screen key doesn't appear to be doing anything. Or maybe I really am an idiot.
      • edited July 2008
Here I go again. I googled information on how to do it, and I did it. I have a screen shot for you. However, the file size is too large to attach (2.85MB). Seeing as the max file size for this file type is 488.3 KB, is there something I can do to get it to you here?

OK! Finally, I was able to crop it down to where you can see the yellow shield with the exclamation point in it. I've seen this icon before and when I startup, it alway pops up a balloon saying, "updates are ready for your computer". When this happens, almost always it will coincide with updates that I am prompted to install upon shut down. I normally will install updates through that "shut-down" window. However, this time I noticed the icon on my taskbar, it did not coincide with the normal update prompt in the "shut-down" window. I have heard of viruses and spyware being disguised as security updates and so forth. So, when I saw that this icon did not also coincide with a prompt upon shut-down, a red flag went up and I contacted you. I have had a badly infected computer in the past, and you helped me then. I did not want to make the mistake of clicking on the wrong thing, so I wanted to see if you could tell me if this icon is legitimate or not.

        Hi,

I know what you mean regarding Shut Down and Windows Update. ComboFix shows plenty of recent updates, but no malware which is a good sign.

I believe this is a genuine update, but there is a few files I'd like scanned.

        1.
        • Go to VirusTotal
        • Copy and paste the following file path into the Search Box in the middle of the page:
          • C:\WINDOWS\sed.exe
        • Now, click on the Send File button
        • Save a copy of the Anti-Virus results. Post the results in your next reply.

Do the same for the following...
        C:\WINDOWS\Setup2K\ap561.exe
        C:\WINDOWS\Setup2K\Remove561.exe

        2. Open HijackThis
        - Click the Do a system scan only button
        - Check the following entries (below)

        O16 - DPF: {D71F9A27-723E-4B8B-B428-B725E47CBA3E} (Imikimi_activex_plugin Control) - http://imikimi.com/download/imikimi_plugin_0.5.1.cab

        - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
        - Click Fix Checked
        Close HiajckThis

        3. Please post the VirusTotal results.
      • edited July 2008
OK. I ran the files through Virus Total. I save the results in Word and each scan result takes up 2 1/2 pages. I have sent them as attachments. I also ran a HijackThis sytem scan only and fixed the file you instructed me to. I should mention here that my computer has been running pretty well through this whole process.... even with that update balloon popping up occasionally.

        Hi, those files are clean.

The computer is clean of malware, hence why the computer is running smoothly. You can run the update without any worries.

Let me know if you need any other help.

Ok. Thank you. I will run the updates and get back to you. If they are genuine, we can consider this thread resolved.

I installed the update. It was a maliciouse softwre removal tool. The last time a similar window popped up, I installed it and my computer became badly infected. This file, however, came with a license agreement. I do not recall that happening the last time. So far, I have not been promted as to any infections. I would like to scan the file itself, but a search revealed no result. My computer did not find the file I just installed! I dont know if I need to scan it, but I'm still not convinced it was genuine due to past experience.

The update was legit! I received the same Windows Update which included Microsoft's Tool, so there shouldn't be anything to worry about.
