Connection goes away

What, other than a virus or bug can cause the computer to lose its connection after a few days of being up?

It was weird I was browsing the net a page went to reload and then nothing... Even my local server pages wouldn't load... Rebooted and all is good...

Fresh OS install, Norton 2004 and BlackICE installed and up to date...

Thoughts,

Oh and a repair didn't fix it, only a reboot would...

IP lease ran out and maybe its having trouble getting a new one? Our school network has a 7day lease, but my computer is always able to obtain a new one(same address).

do an ipconfig /all and get the lease expiration date and see if that corresponds with your issue, if it does then there is your answer.. also what network card are you using.. I have seen this issue consistantly with windows xp pro (the version i use) and linksys cards.

Ok so you need to know that I also run a router.
The cable modem is connected to the router and the puter is connected to the router.

The router is Linksys BEFSR41 set at reset or default settings...
I hope that this helps cause I weould like to fix this as its startign to bug the crap out of me...

    Thanks,

Oh yea, I cut the power to the cable modem and the router for a min or so rebooted the machine and put the juice back to the modem and router and everything was cool again...

The weird thing was that I was browsing the net, had been on there for about 15-30 min and all of a sudden a page would not display/load, then I clicked on the home button in my browser and the page would not display...

A repair of the network connection did not fix it... It took the above described to get the connection back...

I've experienced problems like these with Linksys routers before. I've come home to my router having a blank WAN address (what it recieves from the Cable modem). Reset wouldn't fix it, and it ended up being something with Charter's DHCP. This usually happens if Charter pulls me from their network themselves (i.e. NOT a powerloss). And by pull, I'm referring to 'maintenance'. The router seems to eventually get an IP after X amount of resets of Modem/Router.

What Bios version are you using? My feeling is you need an update.

Edit - Oops, I mean firmware version, I posted this when I had just woke up. :rolleyes2

Those linksys routers can be flaky sometimes with certain network cards. What card are you using and what version of the linksys firmware do you have? I'm thinking its a low-level software problem as this was the problem with mine. On a side note I bought a $9.99 network everywhere router and it has yet to give me any trouble.

I just updated to the laest firmware after I posted last night...

Also the router was in DHCP enabled too, so I had the router and the computer as DHCP enabled. I was thinking that, that could be a problem.

As for the card, I'm using the on board ethernet, I know that would normally be a red flag here but for anyone that might qusetion the quality of the ob nic I suggest that you look at my board specs first, supermicro P4DCE+ II.... (not being a smart a$$ here, its just eaiser than actualy typing the specs out)

Also for a long time, like 6 months or more, I have not had any problems... Its just been since this last OS install....

    Thanks,
