I have the "antivirus xp 2008"
Hello, a friend of mine recommended this forum, but I didn't know his username to indicate who referred me. Anyway....
So I have nasty little virus (or trojan or worm or whatever) called "antivirus xp 2008" which actually uses look-alikes of the Windows logo, and is supposed to look like a legit program from Microsoft. I wasn't fooled by it, but the damage was already done. I finally managed to get rid of it after installing 3 different anti-virus/anti-spyware programs (adaware, malwarebytes, and avg). I probably should have run them in safe mode, but I used normal mode. It appears to be off of my computer now, but there are more problems now. The computer takes a very long time to start up. At first I can only see my wallpaper and cursor, then a few minutes later I hear the windows start-up sound, then a few minutes after that things finally start loading. Also, I now cannot get my wireless internet to connect. I tried reinstalling the software, and tried resetting the router, to no avail.
I've had several recommendations from friends. One was to run smitRem in safe mode. Tried it, no change. Some have said to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP, but I'd really like to avoid that, I've done it before and was aggravated by all the trouble. Some have said to do a system restore to a date before I had the problem. But then one friend cautioned me that sometimes viruses hide in the system restore, and it might make everything worse.
So the same friend suggested using HijackThis, and posting the logfile on this forum. So without further ado....

Make a note of the file locaion, check that line and reboot into safe mode, find the file and delete it. Also delete all file from any temp folders from account folders in c:\Documents and Settings"

Please make sure that you only follow the instructions of the professionals and no one else during the process because it may mess up your system. Also, because they are busy it may take a few days for them to respond.
I found a website that analyzes hijackthis files, which is http://www.hijackthis.de/ and despite the address it's available in English. When I uploaded my log, it didn't like the line "O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP chain gap (#17 in chain of 17 missing)" and it recommended a program called LSPFix from cexx.org. It said something about needing to re-number it in order to get internet access back. But after I ran it and then ran hijackthis again, it said that #16 was missing instead of #17. So I simply ran LSPFix 16 more times, and each time it was a lower number missing, and everything was fixed when it got to 0. Then I re-started the computer, and not only did it fix the internet, but it unexpectedly fixed the problem where it was taking forever to load. It now appears everything works fine. But before I celebrate I'm reinstalling AVG, Adaware, and Mawarebytes (now that they can actually update themselves on my computer) and scanning everything just to be sure.
