Need help to get rid of TR/Monderb, TR/Vundo and TR/Crypt

Hi I need some help to get rid of these viruses.

I keep getting AntiVir Guard: Attention Detection! popups for the all 3. There doesn't seem to be any patter as to which one pops up.

The messages include:
TR/Monderb.322816.2 C:\windows\system32\efcBSlKa.dll
TR/Vundo.IK C:\windows\system32\KHArsrOi.dll
TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen C:\windows\system32\wuevjeq.dll

I am unable to run Internet Explorer. Whenever I click on the icon for Internet Explorer a popup appears with the TR/Vundo.IK message.

At times I am unable to download programs and have had a bugger of a time trying to download the files suggested in the "Before you post a HJT report" thread.

It just seems that whenever I try to do something that a popup appears. The fsater I click them the faster they appear.

I wasn't able to do both of the online scans due to the fact I am not able to run Internet Explorer.

Within Windows Explorer both the C: and D: drives are not displayed, but I am able to get to them by typing C: or D: in the address field.

Alot of the normal items on the start menu have also disappeared eg. control panel, my documents however in classic mode they are there.

When a time is displayed there is also VIRUS ALERT! displayed after it for most of the time fields that I have looked at within different applications.

I hope this is enough info to give you an idea of what is happening.

I need this fixed soon as I have a uni assignment due on monday.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Aaron

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    Azureus
    BitTorrent

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

    Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).
Please note: you must NOT use this whilst we are cleaning your machine.

Your Java and Adobe is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java and Adobe components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u7 from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
    • Scroll down to where it says "The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 7 allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

    Update Adobe Acrobat Reader
    • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
    • Cllick Download
    • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
    • Click the Continue button
    • Click Run, and click Run again
    • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Now close all windows, including your browser.
Double click on the Java installation that you downloaded and follow the prompts.

    Remove Programs
Now click Start---Control Panel. Double click Add or Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there,
click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove.
    • Adobe Reader 7.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
      Java(TM) 6 Update 2
      Java(TM) 6 Update 3
      Java(TM) 6 Update 5
      Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    Now close the Control Panel.

    Reboot your machine.

    Note about poker games:

You appear to be a fan of games. but I think it's important to note that often these kind of programs are installed with other unwanted software, namely spyware or adware. If you did not install these programs yourself, or you do not use them any more, I would definitely recommend that you uninstall them from your computer, even if it is simply a precautionary measure. The amount of different poker software which arises on the internet means it is impossible to keep track of which ones are infected and which ones are not. If you do use the software, and wish to continue doing so, please ignore this. If you do decide to go ahead and remove the poker software, you should be able uninstall them via add/remove which can be found in the control panel. Let me know if you have any problems whilst doing so.
Here are links to some poker sites regarded as safe for your reference.

    Hi Katana,

Thanks so much for your help. My PC seems to be running a lot better now. Although every now and then the screen goes black for a couple of seconds and then returns to normal. Not sure if this is related but thought I would mention it. It never did it before I had all this trouble.

As I am writing this a AntiVir Guard: Attention, Detection popup just appeared.

    TR/Spy.204800B C:\WINDOWS\system32.g0.exe

    The steps I took include:

    I removed BitTorrent and Azureus.
    I updated Java and Adobe.
I removed the older versions of Java and Adobe and rebooted.

My son is the poker player. He won't be playing anymore on my computer.

I did the HJT scan and fixed the lines you mentioned.

After all this I did a scan using SUPERAntiSpyware. It rebooted my PC after it 'removed and quarantined". The log from that follows:

We are definately getting close, I just need to sort out that last file.

    Fix With HJT

Close all other windows and then start HiJack This
Click Do A System Scan Only
When it has finished scanning put a check next to the following lines IF still present
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe"

    Click yes to any prompts
    Close HijackThis

Let's see if we can find this go.exe

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)

    Hi Katana,

I did an HJT scan only and selected the lines you highlighted above. Then I did a "Fix checked"

    All seemed to work OK.

I then downloaded the Combofix program to my desktop.

When I went to download the Windows Recovery Console from the Microsoft support website I keep getting "Server Not Found" error pages displayed. I cannot get to google, yahoo, any of my bookmarks or any other web address that I enter into the address field. I can however get to my homepage and this site. I'm a bit scared to close down firefox for fear that I might not be able to get back here.

I also tried via Internet Explorer and get similar results. When I go to google etc it tells me I can't open the search page, although I can get to my normal firefox homepage.

I have done a HJT scan. Here it is:

    Disable Teatimer
    First step:
    • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
    • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
    • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
    • Open Spybot S&D
    • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
    • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
    • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
    • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
    • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
    • OK any prompts.
    • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
    • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

    Restore Host File

Download HostsXpert v4.1 and unzip it to your desktop.
    • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the program.
    • Click on Restore MS Hosts File to restore your Hosts file to its default condition.
    • Click on Make ReadOnly to secure it against further infection. (unless you plan to use another host file)
    • Exit the program.

Visit the Website for more information.

    Run ComboFix using these instructions:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste the following bolded text into the run box & click OK.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

OK, finally got myself back online. I had to contact my ISP and they helped me reset my modem.

    I disabled tea timer.
    I then ran HostsXpert.

After that I ran Combofix using your instructions.

    Here is the Combofix log

Your Panda log showed that there are infected items in you Thunderbird e-mail, I recommend that you empty your Inbox and SPAM and JUNK and then empty the Deleted folder.

    Custom CFScript
    • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
      File::
      C:\WINDOWS\system32.g0.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\pbaiiool.dll

    • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

      CFScript.gif

    • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
    • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
    • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

    Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)

NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
    Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Allow the ActiveX download if necessary and let the database download.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

    **Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
    • Close any open programs.
    • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Are things running smoothly now ?

Congratulations your logs look clean :D

Let's see if I can help you keep it that way

    First lets tidy up :D

    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.
      • CF_Cleanup.png

You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

    Enable Teatimer

    • RIGHT click Link >>> HERE <<< Link and select "save as" and save it to your desktop
    • Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
    • Open Spybot S&D
    • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
    • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
    • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
    • check the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
    • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
    • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
    • You can now delete ResetTeaTimer.bat

The following is some info to help you stay safe and clean.
( Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )

You may already have some of the following programs, but I include the full list for the benefit of all the other people who will be reading this thread in the future.

    Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.

    http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan
    http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/71706/kavwebscan.html

!!! Make sure that all your programs are updated !!!
Secunia Software Inspector does all the work for you, .... see HERE for details

    AntiSpyware
      AntiSpyware is
not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
Most of the programs in this list have a free (for Home Users ) and paid versions,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.
[*]Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< A must have program
    • It includes host protection and registry protection
    • A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites

    [*] MalwareBytes Anti-malware <<< A New and effective program
[*]a-squared Free <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
[*]superantispyware <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner

    Prevention
These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place. Each does a different job, so you can have more than one
    • Winpatrol
      • An excellent startup manager and then some !!
      • Notifies you if programs are added to startup
      • Allows delayed startup
      • A must have addition
    • SpywareBlaster 4.0
      • SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
    • SpywareGuard 2.2
      • SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware.
      • Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol
    • ZonedOut
      • Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
    • MVPS HOSTS
      • This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
      • For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002.
      • Not required if you are using other host file protections

    Internet Browsers
Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys. Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.
    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.
    • FireFox
      • With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice
      • NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential
    • Opera
      • Another popular alternative
    • Netscape
      • Another popular alternative
      • Also has Addons available

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page. Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware. It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis. Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often. A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted. CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
    • ATF Cleaner
      • Free and very simple to use
    • CCleaner
      • Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

Also PLEASE read this article.....So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

    Happy surfing K'

    Hi Katana,

I will have to cleanup and download your suggested programs on the weekend. I have to get my uni assignment finished, so am flat out doing that at the moment.

I will let you know once I have done it (the cleanup that is) and if everything is still alright.

Please don't archive the thread just yet.

    Cheers,
    Aaron

    Hi Katana,

Seems like there is still some gremlins in my PC.

I left the PC for a while (about a day) and when I came back to it there was a Antivir Guard popup displayed.

    TR/Spy.204800.B C:\System Volume Information\..\A0051946.exe

It seemed to appear when antivir was doing an automatic update. Antivir was stalled at at 4% done. When I clicked to "deny" the alert, Antivir continued dowloading the update straight away and installed it OK.

Thanks again for your help with this.

    Cheers,
    Aaron

When you do the following, it will clean out your System Restore (\System Volume Information\ ), and create a fresh clean restore point.
This should sort your Avira problem :)

Hi Katana, I ran combofix and enabled the teatimer. I also got rid of the logs and emptied the trash. I have a couple of questions. I have Spybot with the teatimer. Do I need one of the other "realtime" antipyware applications. Should I purchase one of the asquared or superantispyware that has the realtime option in the purchased version? Do you have a preference? I also have MBAM. I've installed Winpatrol. Is Spyware blaster a realtime application? I also installed NoScript and AdBlockPlus for Firefox. One last question. What antispyware/malware/realtime guards and other security type software do use use personnaly? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Aaron

Right, I'll try and get these in the order they come :)

If you have WinPatrol, you don't need Teatimer as well.
As for other "Realtime" protection, yes, it is better to have an Antispyware running as well as Antivirus.
If you are willing to purchase one, I recommend MBAM, in my opinion it is currently the best. ( and NO, I don't get any money from them  )

Spyware blaster is not "RealTime", you run it once and then forget about it until it has been updated (not very often)

    My current protection is
    1) Safe Surfing
    2) Avast AV
    3) MBAM AS (with RealTime protection)
    4) WinPatrol
    5) Firefox with all security addons
    6) Safe Surfing (yes, I know I've already said that but it is the best prevention )

I don't personally use a FireWall, but that is for a few reasons.
    1) I have a Router which acts as incoming protection
    2) The files that I play with would make any firewall have a nervous breakdown
    3) My security awareness is slightly more paranoid than most PC users

Fantastic. I will take your advice and purchase MBAM, and pretty much mirror your setup. Do you have a preference for a good firewall? I am only using Windows XP firewall at the moment. Cheers, Aaron

A third party firewall is much safer than the Windows basic firewall , as it stops malware that does get on your PC from contacting "home" Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check
