bandwidth usage

edited July 2008 in Science & Tech
We have a network of about 35 computers. Recently our internet and email has slowed way down. We run off a T-1. Our server is running Server 2003 and all the computers are running XP Pro. I've contacted our provider and they say everything is fine on their end. What I need is something that can tell me how much bandwidth each PC is using so I can find out where the problem is. It could be spyware, a program issue or a usage problem. We are a nonprofit so I need something very affordable and easy to set up and use. Thanks!

Check out a program called The Dude it's free and should do what you want.

Thanks. I haven't gotten it to work yet. Also, it didn't say in it's help that it could track individual bandwidth on each IP address connected to the network. Can it do that? I'll try and keep working with it.

http://www.smoothwall.org/ would be able to do what you need, but it would probably take too much time and energy to setup. It will show graphs and usage for each computer, but it takes an old computer and some setup.

What kind of router are you using?

It's a linksys router. No firewall.

Let me see if http://www.dd-wrt.com/ has the ability to monitor individual computers when I get home. This method would involve flashing your routers firmware, so I'm not sure how comfortable you would be with that.

Hopefully someone can find a nice monitoring tool first.

Yep you just tell it what IP's you want to monitor and track and it'll graph them.

Thank you both so much for the suggestions. I will continue to work with The Dude and see what I can get out of it and will look into the router tool also. I'm getting ready to go on vacation so it will be about a week before I can mess with it again.
