Trend Micro speaks ill of own market

When discussing the efficacy of anti-virus applications, it is rarely a surprise to read articles like this or this which paint a disappointing -- and expected -- picture of the industry. Even a cursory search of Icrontic's very own SVT forum tells the tale of hundreds who are infected in spite of being equipped with virus protection.
Enthusiasts have long agreed that virus protection often delays the inevitable. Today they are joined by the voice of Eva Chen, the chief executive of Trend Micro.
Her stance is clear and refreshing:
[blockquote]In the antivirus business, we have been lying to customers for 20 years. People thought that virus protection protected them, but we can never block all viruses. Antivirus refresh used to be every 24 hours. People would usually get infected in that time and the industry would clean them up with a new pattern file.[/blockquote]
The interview is disappointingly brief, but it paints a sad picture of the anti-virus industry when its own luminaries don't have faith in their own products. We can only hope that recognizing the problem is the first step in mastering it.
