SATA Cables

edited July 2008 in Hardware
I have heard that SATA cables that have been bent in a 90 degree angle could become obsolete.

One of my cables came wrapped in a tight coil.. I wouldn't have been so worried if I had not heard cracking while I unwound it. =/

Anyone mind telling me if it will still work? Or could it be defective?

The crackling was probably the stiff rubber sheath, and not the material inside. It won't kill anything if you give it a whirl, and you'll know right away if it's bad because your hard drive won't be detected.

There is also a foil layer on the inside of SATA cables to protect the cable from EMI.

Maybe the foil too, try it.

A 90 degree bend shouldn't cause any problems in the cable. The only time you have to worry about it is if there's a visible kink in the line, which typically would be caused by it being pinched when they are put into micro atx cases that have folding drive bays or if the cable is bent 180 and then pinched.

What you may be thinking of is fiber optic cables, which can be more easily damaged if they are bent incorrectly.
