In the story we ran yesterday regarding Dirk Meyer's step up to CEO of AMD, we reminded readers that AMD had little to combat Intel's Atom which is rapidly gaining mindshare in the UMPC/MID market. Today's synchronicity comes with the announcement that AMD plans to detail its response to the Atom in November (If not sooner).

AMD's likely challenger is the Bobcat, spoken of nearly a year ago at AMD's last rallying cry. Based on information disbursed at the 2007 event, it is likely to be a 1-10w component with a clockspeed of up to 1GHz, and support for DDR2-800.

Since that time, the Barcelona has timidly crept onto the market, fraught with issues and delays. Undoubtedly, the troubling release of the Barcelona and its derivatives have delayed AMD's time-table when it comes to the Bobcat's release. Hopefully the added time, though painful to their stock valuation, will give them an opportunity to really nail the architecture to gain a foothold in a growing market.
