It could be a couple things. The number of processes you have starting with windows. In your run command box type msconfig and go to the startup tab. that will show you applications starting when you power up. You also could have some spyware. Check out the spyware/virus removal forum for help with that.

As has already been said, slow startup can be related to malware so you should rule that out first. Run an on-line scan like bitdefender.com or kaspersky scan to find out. Again, too many programs launching with windows bootup can also be the issue. If you have too many processes running in Task Manager (I personally don't want to see any more than 30 processes running at idle), your bootup can be awfully slow. If this is your problem, here are a couple of things that can help:
1. Startup 1.3: can help you sort out and switch off unnecessary programs running at bootup and in the background. Get it here: http://majorgeeks.com/StartUp_d4436.html
2. Bootvis: Helps improve bootup times in WinXP (if that is your OS). Read about it here under #89: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1590&page=30 A download link is also embedded in that section. Read and follow the steps listed under #89. Bootvis can be slow to do its thing so be patient if you go this route.

Is it running normal? or just better? Computer's come into our shop quite regularly with these symptoms with failing harddrives. If i remember correctly HP has a decent harddrive diagnostic in the BIOS. It's been a while since i owned my DV6000. I can look into it further if you're interested in testing your harddrive, i'd recommend it.

Not sure if it is NORMAL, it still takes about 3 minutes to boot [Cold to desktop but after entering Windows Pass Word, to WPW it takes about 1 minute].
Currently there are 45 processes running. Only Firefox and Windows Task Manager are open in addition to programs that came online upon boot up.
14 are under my user name, David.
2 are local service.
3 are Network Service.
26 are System
It is not unusual to see about 55 active processes.

Alright. Sorry to be so slow on getting back with you, but I'm back with some suggestions.
My primary concern with your PC is that you have three protection programs running at the same time. Symantec programs are not only a tremendous resource hog, but also completelyineffective. This is the major reason why your PC is so slow to boot.
There are a lot of free, light-weight alternatives out there that will cover your bases. I suggest uninstalling Spyware Doctor, Symantec and WinPatrol and then installing a free solution:
-Avira AntiVir
-ClamWin
-AVG
Getting rid of the programs I mentioned and replacing them with just one of the above options will really quicken your boot time, and increase your PC's responsiveness.
If you're willing to do that, I suggest removing these entries in HiJackThis by checking them all, then removing them. Once you're done with that, uninstall those applications and restart:
