raid, sizes, partitions oh my!
MoTHA_NaTuRE
All over this bizzatch called FL
okok, i have gotten in my p4c800e-dlx board, and am planning on raid 0 for my 2x 120g diamondmax 9's 8mb cache on the promise pata raid ide.
this will be my first venture into raid striping, so bear with me.
is there anything important i need to know before i start. and also im planning on using a 16k stripe size. should i use a larger stripe size? ill be mostly gaming.
i was also reading up on cluster size for the ntfs partition of winxp. supposedly it should be double the stripe size? no idea there, should i just leave default? i didnt even know you can change the cluster size for winxp ntfs partition.
my other question would be how should i go about partitioning the drive. with a 240gb stripe, i usually just format the entire drive as a C: but i see having a separate partition for windows and one for program is advantageous. also, i see some people dedicate one partition just for the page file.
i just want to get the most optimal raid and winxp install with one shot. i hate wasting time on redos.
thank in advance for you guys help! i truly appreciate it!
maybe after i get this pc built, i can have a sig with my system specs where i can be proud of,

With the Promise RAID comes a RAID management utility (it's on the ASUS downloads page for this mobo) that you can use to change things around AFTER the initial setup. I would go with 16 stripe/32 cluster as an initial setup, bench then tweak/test different cluster & stripe sizes.
These suggestions are 'educated guesses' from another *relative* newb to RAID but based on reading many threads on these forums. Others with more experience will undoubtedly weigh in shortly.
If your experience is anything like mine, you're going to love that mobo.
