NVIDIA and AMD are in an arms race of GPU news today. NVIDIA unleashed the first volley with their release of PhysX for CUDA-enabled GPUs, but AMD has the last laugh by snatching the single-card speed crown. AMD was proud to announce the long-awaited, oft-rumored and fairly-priced Radeon 4870 X2 this afternoon.

The shiny new good delivers a Crossfire solution for owners of motherboards with a single PCIe x16 slot. Pulling no punches, this card does not downclock the twin 4870 GPUs that power it.

With 1600 stream processors, 2GB of GDDR5 (Double that of a CF 4870 rig), and a whole lot of other really big numbers, this card will rock 2560x resolutions and spit out respectable numbers.

Yours for the tidy sum of $549. We think it has NVIDIA seeing red.
