VMWare ESX 3.5U2 chaos

It is not uncommon for enterprise software firms to bundle test releases of their software with an expiration date. This ensures that a complete product can be thoroughly tested and then later disable itself in time for the public release. Unfortunately for VMWare with their ESX 3.5U2 update, the expiration date for engineering copies slipped into that public release. Chaos unfurled yesterday evening when administrators around the globe restarted their VMs only to find that the servers could no longer boot as they had expired.

Numerous workarounds were posted to circumvent the issue while waiting for a patch, but the efficient VMWare has delivered a patch in less than 24 hours:

An issue has been uncovered with ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 that causes the product license to expire on August 12, 2008.



Follow the steps below to correct this issue:



1. Read the following Knowledge Base articles first:

2. Download and apply the express patch according to the product(s) you have:
