Testing a machine?

I've been configuring a new Dell pc for a colleague, there have been a couple of niggling problems - nothing major but slight gripes which have not occured when configuring other PCs.

So... I would like to test the PC overnight - what diagnostic tools would you guys reccomend (free if possible!) - the only things I have really used are ancient versions of memtest 86 - probably a bit long in the tooth now.

It's a dual core vista business machine with 4gb of ram (vista 32bit not 64)

Memtest 86 may be old, but it's still good. I would download that and give the machine a run through. If it's a Dell machine it should also have a Dell Diagnostic partition. You should be able to choose it from the boot menu. I would set it to perform all scans except the Audio, Visual, and CD scans, all of which require human interaction.
