Thinking about getting some upgrades

Icrontian
So its been a couple years since I built my pc. I've done a couple upgrades since then, sound card and video card, and now I'm feeling that familiar itch to do some spending and thought I'd consult with the icrontians beforehand. I'm thinking I'll be getting processor, mobo, and ram.
My current setup:
mobo: Biostar 6100-939
proc: Opteron 165
ram: 2gb Corsair XMS
What I've been looking at so far:
proc: thinking Core 2, possibly either the e8400 or maybe the q6600
mobo: no idea. Not terribly concerned with SLI, but does need to have at least 1 pci-e slot.
ram: probably at least 2gb of DDR2, possibly 4gb to take advantage of 64bit operating system
I'm looking in a price range of no more than 500. So what recommendations have you? I do do folding, but is a quad core that helpful other than for ppd purposes? Any help shall be thanked with the thankfulness of a thousand suns.

Thanks, forgot about that. Looking through it now.
if so you can get this for $430.00
-Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz
-DFI LANPARTY DK P35-T2RS
-OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
Good setup. Highly recommended, especially the mobo.

(difference of only 20 buck over the e8400)

Total comes to $442.36 after shipping. I'm gonna sleep on this for a day or so. Anymore input is welcome.
if you're not going to overclock i guess the $20 is worth 166mhz, but from what i hear the E8400 overclocks well and you could use that $20 towards a nice cpu cooler
edit: 166mhz is not worth $20. the retail intel heatsink is ok, but honestly you will want a better one.
i have it and couldn't be happier. has awesome features, overclocks very easily and is rock solid. just a consideration for crossfire down the road.
I wouldn't doubt you since you have a DFI, just getting my input in there.
