Spore/Vista

Here is my short review of Spore:
On XP: It's ok. Nothing more, nothing less.
On Vista: I hate it. EA should be ashamed of themselves.

I just spent the last four hours trying to get this game running on my wife's laptop which is more than enough to run the game. Won't even start up - it just crashes to the desktop. The EA support pages and forums are of no help, nor is the download manager. You can't look for updates until you've registered your game, and you can't register the game until it's running. It took several calls navigating the EA phone support menu system to get to a live person... It should be noted at this point that if you ask "the automated system" for tech support on Spore you'll be told to go to EA's web site which was as helpful as a blind tour guide in an art museum. I had to remain silent on the line to confuse the system enough to let me talk to a person. 15 minutes of hold time later I spoke to someone who was able to explain the solution...

Apparently in Vista you have to copy the files from the DVD to your computer, reboot into Safe Mode with networking support, and install the game from Safe Mode. I haven't tried it yet, but WHAT THE **** EA?

Ok, so the "manual install" method didn't work. After speaking to tech support (again), it sounds like it's a bad disc. So I'm off to Best Buy to try and exchange it. Failing that, EA will replace the disc for me.

In that situation I might have considered just getting a pirated copy instead of navigating the phone lines. That and the DRM sucks pretty hard.

Glad to hear you got it resolved though, still a headache.

Now as much as we all hate DRM, let's not publicly make suggestions like that. ;)

I had no problem loading Spore on any of my Vista Machines. 2 are 32 bit and one is a 64. Loaded it straight from the disk, registered the account and was able to update immediately to version 1.01.
Must be something wrong with the disk or there's something on your wife's machine that Spore doesn't like.

What difference does the OS make? Spore is Spore...

I would never consider piracy an option:D... Seriously though, I purchased my copy the day it came out.

Best Buy let me exchange my copy. The replacement didn't work either. I'm going to call them this evening and inquire further.

Vista users have had an extremely wide array of experiences with Spore. Winga stands at one end, and I clearly stand at the other. Take a look at the official forum...

I thought you were rating the game itself, not your installation woes. From the Sporum it looks like install problems aren't just a Vista thing. Folks have issues with both Windows and OS X.

I suppose it could have been made more clear that the laptop was the Vista system.

Probley wont install the retail version due to the DRM unless i get bored of single player and want to try it online.

This is probably what I will end up doing, but I don't want to support DRM, so I'm torn.

All I am suggesting is that if you bought the game and it meets your minimum requirements you deserve to have a working copy.

I agree. I'm trying to get this resolved through official channels though as I believe EA should be pestered until they fix their stuff.

Are you using an unlegit copy? If so, try removing the EA Download Manager...

Good luck sir! You have shown far more patience than I would in this situation.

Installed straight away on mine and has worked without a hitch up to and including the space stage. Ironically, I had many more problems with it on XP than on Vista, due to hardware stuff. I'm disappointed though that the game itself is kinda weak, seems like ol WL is taking the Big Ns strategy of watering down a very similair gaming experience time after time. Ah well. If the admin trick doesn't work, I'm not sure what would, to be honest.
