I have Microsoft word and have put in the product key. I am not able to add text to the word document that my friend sent me as an email attachment.

because it's read only, and you're probably opening it straight from your email program.

Save As to a new place, and it'll become editable.

This is a touchy subject for me.

I wish there was a message that popped up if you open an office doc directly from your email that says

"ANYTHING YOU DO WITH THIS DOCUMENT WILL BE DELETED... SAVE TO A FOLDER (IT'S THE YELLOWISH BROWN THINGS THAT LOOK LIKE FOLDERS) BEFORE PROCEEDING."

I spend amazing amounts of time explaining to customers that they're updates and edits have been lost because they didn't follow the directions that I typed to them in the email before opening the attachment. I have to apologize to THEM. I want a f***king apology for having to explain the sh*t twice.
