Sharing internet connection

Ok I gave up on trying to use my router to network my two computers. I found my crossover cable and now I am able to share files using the shared folder.
Now how do I get the second computer to access the internet? I am on dialup. Using the built in LAN on the 8rda+ and a NIC on the other computer with a crossover cable between.

You have to enable internet connection sharing on the LAN adapter in the computer with the dialup connection.

What OS? XP has a network wizard that you run on each PC and you're set.

I am pretty sure I enabled internet sharing one the computer that has the dial up. But I will check again to make sure when I get home.

Both computers are running XP pro. I have run the network wizards and for somereason I still can't get on the net.

I should be able to just open IE and it should work right?

Well, look at the dialup that IE is using as default. See if it is the old one that was being used on the network, and see if it has an X in red on it, or if in the dialup it has a Disabled next to it. Windows HAS had problems doing a direct cable connect to IE on a box not hooked right to dialup without enabling a proxy type setup on the computer that IS hooked right up. The computer that is directly connected needs to be alvways on, and if you use DHCP you will need the XP box that is directly connected to have a DHCP server for the other box. You have a very large security hole this way, unless the box that is not hooked updirectly has a complete end-point security suite in it, also.

I would frankly get a router that can VPN plus firewall if you can, this will let you do both things better as far as not gettign the box that does not have a direct cialup connect working adn safe from viruses and other gremlins, AND from your dialup ISP klnowing exactly what your not directly connected box is doing as far as accessing the web. You cannopt set both boxes to same IP address, you see, and the way netorking works the ISP servers will KNOW you hav two boxes while paying for one account.

Essentially, box that is directly connected needs to play server, box that is not directly connected needs to be a LAN client. That and security is reason for router use instead of a direct cable connect, so it is why XP really was not designed to do this by itself with dialup and a direct DIALUP connect fed to the box that is not directly hooked to modem both in action all the time.

Easiest way is a router with VPN that is hard wired and an internet connection share on both boxes with DHCP from router to both as to LAN IPs. THEN, the box that is hosting can handle the internet interlinking better, and act a bridge for the other box, but the hosting box just became an always powered up box also that way. This VERY complex to set up right, as XP Pro was not designed as a server O\S, under any circumstances. In the lopng run, if you can get same, an always on low bandwidth ADSL setup wold be easier to setup and even that is not a simple thing with a direct cable connect. I think best thing would be to surf only from box that is direct connected, and transfer files and updates to other box via direct cable. Sorry. :(

Check the IP setting of the machine trying to share the internet, it should have the gateway set to 192.168.0.1 and have a static IP address for itself.

ICS can also function on DHCP.

    Lots of stuff!!!

Ok So you are saying I should just go back to trying to use the router. I was trying that before and was having a hard time just accessing the shared folders. I will go back and try it again tonight then
