Halo Demo + Radeon 9000 Pro = BSOD

I've tried my card on multiple comps, and 2/3 times it will give me a BSOD when I load a game. This is in Windows XP.

And I can rarely set the video settings above their "safe mode" level.

I noticed in the FAQ that the Radeon 9000 Pro is not on their list of "supported video cards"

It's the only game that gives me problems, which sucks because it is really fun.

I'm afraid to buy the whole game since I have a feeling it won't work.

The BSOD says something about an ati32something.dll

    ati3d2ag.dll

It happens when I load a level (sometimes) and when I change the video settings.

Weird thing, it didn't happen when i first installed on this computer. But it does happen now with my card on other computers.

Well well, as it seems is often the case, I found out the answer by myself. Aparrently thousands of people with Radeon 8500-9200s have had this problem with the later versions of CAT drivers. I think I found a "solution" that might work.

    DOSMAN,
Can I ask what the solution is that you've found?

I used to have the exact same problem with my 9200. Random BSODs (only in games) that were either "ati3d2ag.dll" or the occasional "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGE_AREA"

It was especially frequent when playing Halo. When the Cat 3.8's came out I tried them and have had no problems since, and I haven't bothered getting any new drivers since then because I don't want to jinx it :D

So if you havent tried them yet, try the 3.8s maybe it was that new VPU Recovery thing...

    Good Luck

I really think Halo is still in development as far as Radeons go - it crashes hard every time I run the opening screens. By which I mean it shuts the machine right down dead - not just a reboot. HOWEVER, if you go looking for Halo.exe, right click it and set it to compatibility mode > Windows 2000, it then runs perfectly. Beats me!

its also the ONLY thing I have ever had an issue with on this rig. Stupid game.

Another thing I forgot to add... in the SmartGart tab of video properties make sure fastwrite is set to off, that seemed to help as well.

I've tried disabling VPU recovery, disabling fastwrite, and setting 2000 compatibility, and it still messes up.

3.10 seems to crash more often than 3.9 did. And it's only in Halo.
