Gents,

My wife turned off the coputer today because the city was doing utility work and said they were cutting the power. The pwer was off for 30mins, my wife went to turn the machine on and now it wont start, dead as a doornail.

Is the power supply dead? I dont see any obvious damage, but I dont know what else it can be. Everthing else in the house works fine, as does the monitor, speakers etc. plugged into the same power strip.

Thanks

Double check the small power cut off that may be on the PSU itself, on the back of the tower.

Also: are any lights on on the motherboard or elsewhere inside the case?

No lights at all, I tried the switch too, no deal.

you may be lucky and just lost a PSU.
Open the side of the case and take a look, and take a smell of the PSU.

I did and it smells normal. Dusty, but normal.

If you don't get lights on the motherboard, then it can be one of three things:

    An improper ground
    a bad PSU
    a bad motherboard

search the motherboard for a blown capasiter, if you find one, then the motherboard need to be replaced. If not, try to assemble the system outside of the case, and see if it functions, if not: try a new PSU.

Im looking at replacement PSUs. Are they all configured to install the same way?

Most of them do. There are some that are oversized, especially when you get into the higher wattage units. They're typically longer than standard.

If you're shopping for a PSU, try the Marketplace. It'll find you the lowest price. Try this link.

    Who makes your PC?

Dell & HP are notorious for propietary PSUs..

Be careful, you can blow you MoBo if you plug a generic PSU into a Dell-configured MoBo...

No, this is a home-built machine. Im replacing a 600w with an Atec 650W. It looks really similar.

Dell and HP haven't used proprietary PSUs in a very long time.
