Sweet HEPC

I was looking in my copy of PCW this month (since it arrived this morning) and saw this. I saw it as a complete system but I didn't want to pay the £1200 ($2,002.30) for it, but in this magazine it had the barebones system.

Its the ultimate HEPC, because you can play MP3s, CD's etc. without turning the PC on and it looks sweet.

Here are the specs.

The only problem with it is that its a P4 motherboard. Personally, I'd prefer JUST the base and buy the rest myself. Going to buy one though.

MSI have an AMD one coming out soon based on the KM266 chipset ;)

I've seen one of these little babies close up. They rock!

Your currency calculation is off by a cent. It is 2,002.31 american dollars to 1200 UK pounds. 1 GBP = 1.66859 USD. YOu always round up.

I think that the difference between the two has gone down since that number was calculated. I think that it is closer to 1.6613, so that will make 1200 pounds equal to about 2000 dollars.

A little off topic. For the currency conversion I used XE, because that has the latest rates.

Anyway, comments on the HEPC :P

You've got it all mixed up, we're on the verge of deflation. That is when the value of the dollar increases and the relative cost of goods and services decreases. It sounds nice but can be very dangerous. A slow rate of inflation is generally healthiest for the economy.

As for the HEPC, it looks pretty but it also seems severely underpowered for the cost. For that much money you could power your custom-built HEPC with a Radeon 9700 Pro and give it some serious audio kick, PLUS one of those funky looking VXD screens or whatever they're called.

The thing I can't understand about it is how can you use the CD Player, MP3 Player or Radio when its turned off?

Maybe it just has another little dedicated microprocessor that lets it function without booting the whole computer, like a hard-drive based mp3 player with a CD player.

You'd probably just need to boot the thing to do data transfers and play DVD's, stuff like that.

Makes sense. I can either wait for the Athlon version to come out (unless it isn't already) or try and fit a Mini ATX mobo in with a Athlon 900 processor. Anybody think that would work or does it need a non-standard motherboard?

Edit: Ok, I just realised that a mini atx bard won't fit because they have an AGP slot, and two PCI slots - where as this case only has space for one of each. It is a pity.

whats the big thing about this...i mean its 2k...and for what? so you can play mp3s and cds when the comp is on... I mean personally i LOVE the way it looks and i was thinking about buying one, but its 2k
is this thing really worth it?

Im still not 100% sure where the 2k value comes in.

The barebone unit itself (just needs processor/memory/harddrive & CD/DVD to make it complete) is about $329

Just thought I'd ask if anyone has found the Athlon version yet. I've tried so many searches and not found them for sale (in the UK).

    Nixxer: Mini-ATX is 4 slots, not 3 (AGP + 3 PCI).

Have to admit, it does look cool though.

I rang my chap @ MSI and they confirmed an AMD based version for Late August/Early September :)

The chipset and final design is not finalised, but as soon as I have more definitive details, I shall let ya all know.
