Need some help.

Keep losing all my mapped drives, printers, and the connection to my Exchange Server.

Been all over the MS site looking for a solution.

Tried running a debug program, but XP shuts down the process before I can find out what's causing it!

Image attached, any help would be appreciated...

I'd suggest doing a memtest based on that error message.

    Hi kryyst,

    Did a memetest

    Ran NOD32 AV - clean

    Ran Avast AV - clean

Ran every spyware tool IC recommends - clean

Tried to do a repair install of XP, failed - Still get the same Generic Host Error.

Searched every permutation of "Generic Host Error" I could think of for a less time consuming fix.:eek3:

All come back with a SP2-related fix from MS. Unfortunately, this fix won't run if you have any service packs that supercede it (IE: SP3)! Even with hundreds of posts all over the web about this error, MS still has not released a new fix for this issue.

So far the ONLY fix I have found that works 100% is rather time consuming.
    1. Roll back all updates to SP2.
    2. Install this Service Pack update
    3. Finish installing all following updates

You can do a clean install of XP SP2 also - this might save time, since rolling back this many updates can actually take longer, and has the potential to casue even more problems, than a clean install.

Doing a repair install may be faster and cleaner then doing all the rollbacks and fixes.

    Ahhh missed that

Well bit of a longshot but you could also try clearing your pagefile. It won't hurt anything, could help other things, but may fix this problem.

Unfortuantely NO, it is most definately software related. I pulled my HHD and put it in two matching Dell PCs - SAME ERROR each time!.

Base image for a Optiplex 755 - (I built the image - clean, MS Office 2002, all patches & updates to SP3)

    Figured it out.

My wife is a teacher here at the same district where I work. One of her students used her flash drive and infected it with autorunme.exe. I had plugged her flash drive into my machine, because she said it wasn't working, and unknowingly infected my PC. We use Command AV here at the district. Command seems to be able to eviscerate autorunme.exe, but not delete it! It destroys enough of it that it won't show up on a scan, but the file(s) still run when the machine is restarted! I found a blank app in the startup tab of MSCONFIG, that doesn't show up in the Run folder of the registry (see pic) I removed the check mark and saved the changes, and rebooted. Then I ran MalwareBytes to check the whole machine. MB found some leftovers in the restore points, so i ran it again in safe mode. Been fine ever since.
