Arnie goes for a walk

edited December 2003 in Science & Tech
In some non-computer news... an earthquake hit the U.S State of California yesterday, it registered a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale which made it one of the largest quakes in recent years. Two people were sadly killed when a historic building near the epicenter in Paso Robles collapsed. It is likely however there would have been many more casualties if the epicentre had been located in a more populated area of the State.

In Paso Robles, about 30 miles inland, Jennifer Murick, 19, of Tascadero, and Marilyn Zafuto, 55, of Paso Robles, were killed by falling debris from the collapse of the city's landmark clock tower, police said.

Police and fire officials completed a search of the rubble late Monday with cadaver-sniffing dogs and determined that there were no additional casualties.

The tower was on a corner of a two-story building constructed in 1892. It was across from a municipal park and housed a jewelry store, said Madelyn Stemper, an accountant at a nearby office.

This quake was a 6.5 and lasted about half a minute, 2 people killed in Paso Robles

The 1989 quake was 6.9 and lasted 12 seconds, killed 69 people

The 1906 quake was 7.9 and lasted about a minute (must have been the longest minute of their lives), killed about 3,000 people.

EDIT: The governor has already declared CA in financial crisis, he gets to declare it a disaster area too.
