Vista PC restarted - can minidump help?

My Vista home premium pc just restarted - I thought due to windows updates or something (I was out of the room), but it turns out it was due to a BSOD.
The event viewer simply tells me the previous system shutdown at XX:XX was not expected - so not very useful!
Will the minidump file mentioned above be useful to try and diagnose what caused this blue screen?
